MEAN GREEN SLAYS DRAGONS HANDILY
NACOGDOCHES - Dinky Edwards rushed for 129 yards as the No. 4 ranked Longview Lobos rang up their fifth straight victory with a convincing 28-0 drubbing of the Nacogdoches Dragons here Friday night.

It was the District 14-AAAA opener for both clubs.

Edwards chalked up the biggest night of his short career with a strong second half performance. The swift junior picked up 87 yards in the last two periods on 15 carries. He carried the ball 25 times in the game.

Nacogdoches put together 118 yards total offense, with all but 10 coming through the airways. It was the most yards given up by the Lobos in a single game in the 1976 season thus far.

Longview put together its initial touchdown the first time the Green Machine touched the ball. Longview moved 64 yards in 12 plays, with quarterback Tim Martin scampering in from 21 yards out on a keeper around left end without being touched.

The Lobos put the game away on the very next possession, moving 62 yards in just nine plays with fullback John Henry Jones, who rushed for 97 yards while playing only in the first half, spurting through the middle for the last 15 yards. Jim Tutt added both extra points.

Martin hit Edwards with a 12 yard touchdown strike with just 55 seconds left in the first half for a 21-0 lead. The play culminated an 88-yard, 12 plays drive that took just 2:42 off the scoreboard clock.

Edwards scored again from a yard away with 1:26 left in the third period. That climaxed a 42 yard drive that took just nine plays.

The last touchdown was set up after Nacogdoches had held Longview on downs on the Dragons seven yard line.

The Dragons, however, could punch the ball out only to the 11 in three plays and were forced to punt.

The win was Longview's fifth straight over Dragons since Nacogdoches moved up to Class 4-AAAA. Longview turned out 413 yards total offense, 337 coming on the ground.
