LOBOS BATTER TORS AS PORTLEY DOES TRICK
LONGVIEW - What was supposed to be a tight game turned into a run-away here early in the fourth period as the Longview Lobos bombed the Galveston Ball Tornadoes, 35-15, Friday night.

Reserve fullback Bobby Portley keyed the Lobo charge in the last two periods as he racked up 112 yards on just 11 carries.

Longview, ranked no. 4 in the state coming into the game, ripped the No. 8 rated Tors early as the host took the opening kickoff at their own 22, and following the running of tailback Sherman Johnson, marched 80 yards in 10 plays for six quick points.

Johnson started the drive with a 22 yard gallop down the right sideline and ended it with an identical 22 yard sprint, except this time it was up the middle on a draw play. Jim Tutt added the extra point.

Ball could manage but a single first down in the first half, but tied the game early in the second quarter when the Lobos tried a tight-end around pass with Hosea Taylor and it backfired.

Darryl Smith latched onto the stray aerial at the Tor 38 and sprinted 62 yards untouched for the touchdown.

Longview came right back on the ensuing kickoff and drove 63 yards on 12 plays with Johnson carrying it in from two yards away.

The Lobos capitalized on a Ball miscue as the third quarter began when Aundray Taylor fell on a fumble at the Galveston 21. Johnson scored his third touchdown of the night six plays later on a one-yard run.

It was then that Portley made his move as the next time the Lobos got the ball, the chunky junior burst through the middle for 42 yards to the Ball 11, but that threat was thwarted by a Lobo fumble.

Longview scored twice more in the fourth period, on a four-yard run by Dinky Edwards and a 55-yard interception return by middle linebacker Donald Watkins.

The Lobos finished with 372 yards total offense, all on the ground, while Ball had put together 111 yards, the most given up by the Lobos in a single game thus far.
