| LONGVIEW - Tim Martin and Reno Hutchins combined for two long touchdown passes in the first half and the Longview Lobos dominated play during a rain-soaked second half to take a 14-0 lead win over Dallas Kimball and improve their record to 3-0.
Martin found Hutchins wide open 10 yards downfield at the beginning of the second period after a fake pass into the lane and the junior tight end outraced the Kimball secondary for a 60 yard pass-and-run play. Jim Tutt's extra point attempt misfired, and the Lobos led 6-0 with 9:45 left in the half. The touchdown climaxed a 75-yard, five-play drive that took 2:04. Martin and Hutchins connected again on a 39-yard scoring pass only a little more than six minutes later on the same play. Martin's pass was a little high and behind Hutchins, who made a twisting catch at the Kimball 25 and carried it the rest of the way untouched. Dinky Edwards raced around left end for the two-point conversion with 3:27 left in the second period. The scoring drive was a six-play, 82-yard series that lasted only 2:29. Martin started the drive with a 24 yard romp around right end. It was the Lobos' third consecutive shutout, as Kimball could manage only 45 yards total offense, 41 on the ground. Longview, on the other hand, put together 341 yards total offense, 238 on the overland and 103 in the air. Martin completed all three passes he attempted, hitting Edwards with a five-yard screen pass on his only other try than the two to Hutchins. Those were the first two catches of the year for Hutchins. Longview ran up 203 yards in offense the first two periods after the Green Machine's first two drives were stymied. Both times, however, the Lobos were able to make at least one first down before punting. Hosea Taylor boomed punts of 46 and 47 yards to put Kimball in poor field position each time. It was on Longview's third offensive series that Hutchins and Martin combined for the first touchdown and the very next time the Green Machine had possession the duo hooked up again. In fact, Longview had the ball six times in the first two periods and had made at least one first down each possession. Kimball, however, could make just one first down in the first 24 minutes, that combing midway right at the end of the first period when Rudy Villarreal broke loose around right end for 12 yards on a second-and-nine situation. The Knights' other first down came with just three minutes left in the game when the Lobos were assessed 15 yards. Edwards led all rushers in the game with 70 yards on just 13 carries, a 5.3 average. Sherman Johnson lugged the pigskin 18 times for 56 yards for the Lobos. Martin chipped in 38 on nine, John Henry Jones rushed for 39 on nine totes and Finis Snoddy threw in 35 on 11 as the Lobos showed a diversified attack. Longview controlled the game all the way, snapping the ball offensively 65 times while Kimball had only 41 plays. |
