LOBO GREEN 'MEAN' IN PASCHAL THUMPING
LONGVIEW - Holding Fort Worth Paschal to a minus nine yards of total offense, the Longview Lobos walked away with a 31-0 win here Friday night in front of an estimated 7,000 fans in the new Lobo Stadium to run their record to 2-0.

It was all Longview, offensively and defensively, as the Green Machine ran up 24 first downs while the Mean Green was holding Paschal to just one first down, that coming on a roughing the kicker penalty on the Panthers' first offensive possession.

From there, it was all down hill for the visitors, who managed to gain yardage on just 13 of 30 offensive plays.

Big Hosea Taylor plunged across from one yard away with 9:43 left in the first half for the Lobos' first points, which culminated a 14-play, 69 yard drive that lasted 5:41. Jim Tutt added the point after.

Longview's next six points came on a two yard blast by Sherman Johnson with 3:34 left after the Lobos took possession after a Panther punt on the Paschal 45. The big play in the drive was a 27 yard burst from Johnson on the first play. Tutt's kicks was off to the left.

John Henry Jones, who led all rushers with 110 yards on just 10 carries, got the biggest part of his yardage on the first play from scrimmage in the second half when he took a handoff from quarterback Tim Martin, ripped through left tackle and shook off two would-be tacklers 10 yard downfield and then outran Paschal's John Chandler enroute to a 63-yard scoring scamper.

Dinky Edwards carried across the two-point conversion to give the Lobos a 21-0 lead with 11:30 left in the third period.

Longview's final two 10 points were scored by the second and third offensive teams.

Tutt toed a 23-yard field goal with 8:03 left in the third period and Jones plowed across from a yard out with 7:56 left in the game for the final points of the night.

Meanwhile, the Mean Green defense was settling a score with Paschal's offense. For the past two years, Paschal has been the first team to score on the Lobos and the Mean Green was determined to break that streak.

Panther quarterback George Ellege was the leading rusher for the visitors with 12 yards in seven carries, but the Panthers' other signal-caller, Billy Weimer, was thrown for loses four times for a total of minus 29-yards.

The Green Machine used a total of 10 different ball carriers and four different receivers caught passes. Behind Jones, Johnson finished with 76 yards in 14 carries and Edward had 72 in 12 totes.

Paschal's only bright point was the punting of Jody Norman, who had seven boots for an average of 41.1, including a 54-yarder in the fourth period.

But Martin returned three of those punts for a total of 54 yards, with scampers of 24 and 28 yards to set the Lobos up in good field position.

In all, the Lobos returned five punts for a total of 75 yards, a 15-yard average.

It was a complete turnabout for the Green Machine, which only had 11 first downs and 148 yards of total offense in a season-opening win over Dallas Carter last weekend.

Longview fumbled only three times during the game, with one of those coming on a punt return.

Lobo safety Greg Brown came up with his second pass interception in as many games as he made a brilliant falling one-handed steal of a Weimer pass late in the second period.

Longview had another scoring opportunity in the second period when Tutt missed a 31-yard field goal. Taylor had stripped Paschal running back Weimer of the ball and recovered the loose pigskin at the Panther 22 with 8:22 left in the half.

Four plays later, Tutt misfired on the field goal attempt.
