VIDOR ENDURES LONG NIGHT, LOBOS WIN 46-0
LONGVIEW - It was all down hill for the visiting Vidor Pirates when Longview fullback John Henry Jones steamed 64 yards on the initial snap of the game, en-route to an impressive 46-0, two-hour, 35-minute "marathon" win for the No. 3 ranked Lobos here Friday night.

Jones, a hard-nosed 180-pounder who has rambled off two "jaunts" in the last two games, took the handoff from quarterback Llewellyn Fambles, used the clearing blocks of right guard Kyle Collier and right tackle Steve Bradham and rambled through the Pirate secondary and down the right sidelines untouched for the touchdown only 17 seconds into the contest.

Henry Williams, although he later converted two extra point kicks, missed the first try but it was barely missed as Longview ran up a 12-0 first quarter lead and put the game out of reach by halftime with a whopping 33-0 advantage.

The victory is the third shutout win in a row for the "Mean Green" Lobo defense and it came against a team that severely tested the Longview secondary corps. Passing with flying colors, however, Vidor quarterback Charles Behn could connect on just eight of 33 passes and the Bucs finished with eight of 35 for just 57 yards.

Vidor's rushing game fell prey to the ever-present Lobo defenders and ended the game with only four yards on the ground for a 61 total yardage output.

Vidor and Waco Richfield, Longview's last two opponents, have exactly zero yards rushing against the proud "Mean Green."

Longview's second and third offensive possessions were stopped by downs and a fumble, but the fourth one ended in the other first period score when Leo McCoy rambled over from eight yards out behind the blocks of center Randy Swisher, left guard Kelvin Thurmond and left tackle Rodney Jones.

The initial stanza ended at 12-0 but it wasn't long until the Lobos were knocking at the door once again. Tim Martin, quarterback, hit tight end Gil Harris with a 23-yard aerial on a slant-in pattern for the touchdown climaxing a 12-play, 85-yard drive. Williams booted the conversion for a 19-0 lead.

Behn found the going rough from the likes of tackles Bradham and Hosea Taylor and Roy Goeddwertz was forced to punt.

Seven plays later McCoy stepped into pay dirt territory once again with a one-yarder and Mark Bolten tacked on the extra point for a 26-0 margin. Jones turned on his after burners, on the first snap of the drive for a 25-yard movement as the key play in the march, although Cook used a good block by Collier to pick up four yards on a third-and-two situation halfway through the drive.

Cook's speed was present once more when he streaked 48 yards with just 57 seconds showing on the first half clock for the Lobos' final touchdown in the two quarter rout.

Bradham was a staunch foe in the previous Vidor possession when he dropped Behn on two consecutive plays.

The third period seemed like it would be scoreless until McCoy took an option pitch from Fambles and blasted 54 yards down the right sideline for a score.

The final Lobo tally came with 6:46 left in the game when Sherman Johnson carried the pigskin in from two yards out and Bolted added the PAT.

Three Lobo ball carriers went over the coveted 100-yard mark as Cook registered 115, McCoy 113 and Jones 103.

Longview will host Fort Worth Paschal here next week.
