LOBOS BOP LEE, 13-0
LONGVIEW - The Longview Lobos ran into an aroused Tyler Lee Red Raider team fRiday night and came out with a 13-0 victory in Longview on two outstanding plays by the "Mean Green" defense, to run their 14-AAAA record to 2-0.

The Lobos were held to 80 yards rushing by the Red Raider defense and weren't able to get within whiffing distance of the Tyler goal line until Steve Bradham blocked a Lee punt with 10:16 left in the third quarter and thomas Cook fell on the loose ball at the Tyler Lee 1. Glendell Smith went in from there for the first touchdown.

Then came the most spectacle replay of the night occurred when Ricky Watts, who played middle linebacker for the first time this year, intercepted a Tyler Lee passed and returned it 78 yards for the Lobos' second touchdown.

The Longview offense just could not get started but the Lobo defense came to play as they recorded their fifth shutout in six games.

Linebacker Kelvin Thurmond led the defense with one tackle and 11 assists with defensive tackle Warren Worsham behind him with 11 assists. But Thomas Cook was the big man for the Lobos as he stopped the swift Raider backs from taking off on sweeps as he dumped them five times and had four assists and one interception.

In addition to blocking the punt, Bradham also got to the Tyler Lee quarterback twice for losses of 11 and four yards.

The first half of the game was scoreless but full of action.

Longview took the opening kickoff and the Red Raider defense gave an indiction of what was to come as they held the Lobo offense and made them punt after holding them to zero yardage in three tries.

After the two teams traded punts, Tyler Lee took the ball on its 10 and drove to the Lobo 40 before Bradham burst through to throw Raider quarterback Tim Jones for an 11-yard loss. Lee had to punt and Johnny Fuller took the boot on his own 26, carried back behind his 13 and sprinted to the 30 for a total return of four yards after running about 33 backwards and sideways.

But the Lobo offense still couldn't get cranked up and they had to punt again. Tyler Lee's Richard Berry took the ball on his 37 and was knocked back to his 34 by three charging Lobos.

Longview's "Mean Green" came through again and held the Raiders on third down to forced them to punt. The snap from center sailed over the punter's head and he chased the ball back to the 20 and managed to truffle back to the 23 before he was brought down for a 14-yard loss.

The Lobos took over there, but the offense was still running into a determined Tyler Lee defense that just wouldn't give up much yardage and the "Green Machine" was stymied again. Longview quarterback Steve Gaddis' pass was a little behind Larry Williams, who had snuck into the Tyler Lee secondary on fourth down at the Lee 19.

Longview kicked off to start the second half and then the lid blew off as the hometown Lobos threw the Raiders back to the Tyler Lee 26 in three plays after the Raiders had returned the kickoff to their own 37.

On a fourth and 21, Tyler Lee's Pat Hightower went back to punt and Bradham made his move again as he came roaring through to block the punt and Cook recovered on the Tyler Lee 1 to et up the touchdown run by Smith. Tommy Thomas added the PAT to give the Lobos a 7-0 lead with 10:21 left in the third quarter.

The Lobos kicked off again and things started getting hairy as Lee took the ball back to their own 18 and then proceeded to march down the field in proper fashion and reached the Lobos' 28 in 12 plays before the Lobos put the halt on them.

The Red Raiders had a fourth and eight situation there and the Lee quarterback Tim Jones went back to throw and he was forced to scramble to his right to get away from the heavy Lobo rush. In desperation, he flung a pass downfield. He shouldn't have. An unidentified Lobo lineman got a hand on the ball and then Watts did his thing as he gathered in the battered pigskin, tucked it under his arm, tight roped down the let sideline in front of the crestfallen Tyler Lee bench and outran everyone to the end zone. Thomas' kick was off to the left to leave the score 13-0 Lobos with 4:24 left in the third quarter.

After the kickoff, the Raiders took the ball on their 25 and it looked as if they meant business when Anthony White broke through right tackle for 13 yards on the first play for a first down at the Tyler 38. Then Lamont Martin went over right tackle for five more yards and the Lobo coaches started pacing again, when Jones stepped bad and fired a perfect pass...to the wrong man, Lobo cornerback Thomas Cook gathered in the ball and was tackled after a two-yard return to the Lobo 41.

After an exchange of punts, Tyler Lee took the ball on the Lobo 36 after they backed the Lobo team back to their own four yard line. The Red Raiders drove to the Lobo 10 where Lamont Martin was met by a host of green-shirted Lobos, and fumbled and safety Steve Martin recovered for Longview at the 10.

The Lobos held the Raiders scoreless the rest of the game as Jones went back to pass on virtually every down and he was able to complete only two passes for 28 yards and the Lobos nearly four more would-be interceptions slipped from their hands.

The Red Raiders' Anthony Davis was the leading rusher in the game with 72 yards in 17 carries, with teammate Lamond Martin right behind with 58 yards in 17 carries.

Leo McCoy led the Lobos in rushing 48 yards in 13 carries and the closest Lobo rusher to McCoy was Glendell Smith with 17 yards on eight carries.
