MEAN GREEN STRIKES DOWN DRAGONS
NACOGDOCHES - The Longview Lobos started off 14-AAAA District action with a resounding 23-0 victory over the Nacogdoches Dragons in Dragon Stadium.

Tailback Leo McCoy and fullback Glendell Smith led the Lobos in their fifth straight victory as McCoy had 138 yards in 22 carries and Smith had 81 yards in 15 carries.

The Lobos "Mean Green" defense came through to record their fourth shut-out of the season and gave the Lobos' offense outstanding field position throughout the game. The Lobos had to travel only 32, 36 and 15 yards for their three touchdowns after the Lobo defense had caused the Dragons to cough up the ball each time.

The Lobos received a golden opportunity to go ahead with only 26 seconds gone in the game when Dragon fullback Tommy Coussons fumbled the ball at his own 27 and Henry Williams recovered for the Lobos.

Longview could make only seven yards in four plays and had to turn the ball back to the Dragons at the Nacogdoches 20.

After an exchange of punts, the Lobos recovered another Nacogdoches fumble when Gary Akins fell on the loose ball at the 'Doches 32 when Dragon quarterback Blake Barnett made a bad pitchout that went astray.

It took the Lobos only five plays to score as Leo McCoy went in front five yards out with 1:08 left in the first quarter. Tommy Thomas kicked the PAT to give the visitors a 7-0 lead.

Tommy Thomas kicked off for the Lobos and the ball sailed over Dragon Mike Roberts' head. Jerry Maxie picked it up at his own two, circled behind the goal line and was tackled by a host of green shirted Lobos to give the Lobos a safety and a 9-0 lead with 1:08 left in the first quarter.

On the free kick, the Dragons' Mike Adam shanked the ball off the side of his foot, it came down and hit a Lobo. It took the Lobo seven plays to cover the 43 yards with John Fuller blasting over from the four. Thomas kicked the PAT to give the Lobos a 16-0 lead with 10:29 left in the first half. McCoy carried four times for 35 yards in the scoring drive.

The two teams traded punts until their was about 30 seconds left in the first half when action exploded. On a first down from his own 19, Dragon quarterback Barnett went back to throw long to Perry Colston but someone forgot to tell Lobo safety Stevie Taylor not to get in the way as he intercepted on the Nacogdoches 46 with nine seconds left in the half.

The Lobos tried to score again before the half on a pass from Steve Gaddis and Colston retailed when he intercepted the ball and returned the ball 30 yards to his own 47 as the half ended.
