FLASHY BACKS IGNITE LOBOS PAST VIDOR
VIDOR - If frustrations could be put into words, the Vidor High Pirates would probably have enough volumes to fill the school library after Friday night's loss to Longview's Lobos, 26-0.

Vidor's footballers went to their homes with their 35th straight defeat - dating back to the 1970 season. Maybe some day the Piates will win a football game. The Pirates tried Friday night but the Lobo defense was just too much.

The Lobos came roaring back in the second half to upset the Vidor Pirate homecoming game, 26-0.

Longview couldn't get on track in the first half as they received penalty after penalty, it seemed as if the officials had the whistle stuck in their mouths. The Lobos were penalized 14 times for 110 yards during the game. The Pirates declined 40 more yards in penalties that the Lobos had committed.

After Longview quarterback Steve Gaddis was injured late in the second quarter, backup quarterback Llewellyn Fambles came in and threw for 150 yards and three touchdowns in the second half.

Thomas Cook led the Lobos on the ground as he rushed for 65 yards in seven carries. Leo McCoy had 60 yards in the 17 carries. Longview had 315 total yards while the Lobo defense rose to new heights of glory as they held the Pirates to 63 yards total offense and recorded their third straight shutout of the season.

The first quarter was played in the Lobo half of the field as the Lobos received two consecutive offside penalties before they could even complete the first play from scrimmage after receiving the opening kickoff from the Pirates. Longview could gain only nine yards in two plays and then received a 15 yard penalty for holding on third down that pushed the Lobos back to their own 11. Longview punted to the Pirates at the Lobo 47. The Pirates could gain only two yards in three attempts. Quarterabck Mike Cooksley punted to the Lobo nine.

The two teams traded punts and Longview managed to drive to the Vidor 37 before being stopped on downs with 9:53 left in the first half.

With 2:44 left in the half the Lobos had the ball on their own 49 after a Vidor punt. Quarterback Steve Gaddis swept left end for nine yards before being stopped. Gaddis was injured on the play and sat out the remainder of the game.

Longview managed to reach the Vidor 24 where Tommy Thomas attempted a 41 yard field goal which was short. The half ended there in a scoreless tie.

Then came what was probably Vidor's brightest moment as their band and drill team put on a brilliant firework display in the darkened stadium for the half time show.

Longview kicked off and after swapping punts with Vidor, the Lobos took over on the Vidor 47 with 6:30 left in the third quarter after a Pirate punt and drove for a touchdown with Leo McCoy carrying the last seven yards for a touchdown. Tommy Thomas kicked the point after to make the score 7-0 with 2:20 left in the third quarter.

After the Lobos kicked off to Vidor, the Pirates fumbled the ball two plays later and Longview recovered on the Vidor 31. Fambles passed 31 yards to Henry Williams on the first play for a touchdown. Thomas' kick failed and left the score 13-0 with 1:14 left in the third quarter.

Vidor ran the kickoff back to their own 33 and Longview received another 15 yard penalty for unnecessary roughness to put the ball on the Vidor 48. Two plays later linebacker Jeff Stone intercepted a Pirate pass and returned it to the Vidor 47. Four plays later Fambles passed to Henry Williams for a 36-yard touchdown. The PAT failed and left the score, 19-0 with 10:56 left in the game.

After Longview kicked off the Pirates could gain only seven yards and on fourth down the Pirates' punter Mike Cooksley watched the snap sail over his head and was tackled on his own 14 for a 20 yard loss. Fambles passed to Fuller for 11 yards and a touchdown on a fourth and sixth situation. Thomas added the extra point to make the score 26-0 with 6:22 left in the game. That completed all the scoring.
