| LONGVIEW - Classic football, so says the cook book, requires just the right touch of offense and defense.
Spice these ingredients with action and suspense and you have a dish guaranteed to make football fans hungry for more. Longview's Lobos served that dish to the hometown folks Friday night by polishing off the Waco Richfield Rams, 27-0, in Lobo Stadium. The Longview team just beat 'em. Nose to nose all the way. No big plays, no flukes. They just beat 'em. Only 1,500 fans braved wind and rain spawned by Hurricane Carmen. But it was a great game for the Lobos. The Longview defensive unit gave the Rams a big black eye many, many times during the games. Players like Henry Williams, Steve Bradham, Gary Akins, Warren Worsham, Kelvin Thurmond, Jeff Stone, Kyle Collier, Lewellyn Fambles, Stevie Taylor, Thomas Cook and John Fuller. There were plenty of reserves that saw action against the Rams. Friday's night game was a team effort. All three of Longview's fine quarterbacks - Steve Gaddis, David Gibson and Llewellyn Fambles saw action. Tailback Leo McCoy, the answer to Mr. Clean, ran over the Rams as if he was a big Sherman tank. The Rams will not forget this youngster all season. Leo scored three touchdowns and carried the ball 27 times for a net of 124 yards. He did not lose a yard all night. The talented youngster had great blocking from James Stephens, Larry Williams, John Murphy, Kelvin Thurmond and Jeff Stone. McCoy put the Lobos on the scoreboard early in the first quarter when he plowed over from the three yard line with 4:02 left in the quarter. Tommy Thomas educated toe added the extra point to make it 7 to 0. The drive for the Lobos started at the Waco 34-yard line. It took only nine plays for Longview to score. McCoy carried the ball eight times in the drive. The touchdown was set when McCoy fielded a punt at the Waco 40 and returned it tot he Rams 34-yard line. McCoy took a handoff from quarterback Steve Gaddis at the Richfield three and the speedster rushed over several would be tacklers into the end zone for the second touchdown of the night. With 1:03 left in the second quarter, Thomas kicked the extra point and the Lobos had a 14 to 0 lead. The touchdown was set up when Llewellyn Fambles intercepted a pass from quarterback Kenneth Neal at the Lobo 35-yard line and returned the ball down field to the Richfield 37. A big gainer in the drive was an 11-yard run to the two by Mccoy. McCoy scored from the two. However, the Lobos were given a five yard penalty and the ball placed back at the seven. This time Thomas Cook, wingback, was snowed by ah oct of Rams back tot he 16. On third down and 16, Mccoy turned on his speed around right end and went to the three. On the net play, McCoy went in tot he end zone for the touchdown with 1:03 left in the second quarter. McCoy's final touchdown of the night came on a four yard run over right guard with 3:55 left in the third quarter. Thomas kicked the extra point and the Lobos led, 21 to 0. The Lobo drive started at their own 20 yard line. It took only 14 plays for the Lobos to score and the Longview team was charged with a five yard penalty in the drive The big gainers int he drive was a 14 harder by McCoy and fullback Finis Snoddy had an 18 harder. Wingback John Fuller scored the final touchdown of the night for the Lobos on a three yard run. Thomas' extra point try never got off the ground. It was a bad snap to the holder. The touchdown set up when the Lobos recovered a fumble at the 10 yard line of Waco. Matt McFarland recovered the ball for the Lobos after quarterback Neal fumbled. |
