LOBOS SWEEP BY DALLAS JESUIT
DALLAS - It was just another storybook finish of another non-conference game for the Longview Lobos of Coach Doug Cox at Haggar Stadium here Friday night.

And like a child who hears the same bedtime story every night, this one has not lost its charm for Lobo football fans.

Coach Cox's Lobos blanked the Rangers, 28 to 0, on a perfect night for football. It was also the season opener for both clubs.

The Lobos for the third straight year have defeated the Rangers, who play in the Texas Catholic League. In 1972, the Lobos won, 27 to 0, and last year in Lobo Stadium the Lobos posted a 14 to 0 win.

Quarterback Steve Gaddis and his fine group of runners - Glendell Smith, Leo McCoy, John Fuller, Finis Snoddy and Llewellyn Fambles gave an excellent account of themselves.

The Lobo defensive team was led by the fine linebacking of Kelvin Thurmond, Jeff Stone and Kyle Collier. It was the kind of game the Lobos enjoy playing.

Longview was led by tailback Leo McCoy who had 106 yards rushing in 27 carries. The offensive line of the Lobos opened gaping holes for the Lobo backs to gallop through time after time.

The Lobos gave their first year head coach Doug Cox a satisfying debut in his first game. Llewellyn Fambles, Thomas Cook, Henry Williams and Johnny Fuller were outstanding in defense along with all the Lobo defensive unit as they totally frustrated the Jesuit offensive attack.

Neither Longview nor Jesuit could do much during the first quarter but all kinds of action broke loose during the second quarter. Lobo action, that is.

The Lobos scored three touchdowns in a span of two minutes and 23 seconds in the second quarter. Jesuit set up the first touchdown for the Lobos when Ranger punt Steve Barker faked a punt on fourth down and 7 yards to go on his own 19. He swept around right end and he evaded one Lobo tackle but was brought down on the Jesuit 22 yard line. The Lobos only took five plays to score their first touchdown of the year with Thomas Cook taking the ball in on a 7-yard run around right end for the touchdown. Tommy Thomas added the extra point after the touchdown to make the score 7 to 0 with 10 minutes and 30 seconds left in the second quarter.

Hosea Taylor kicked for Longview and the Jesuit Rangers received a clipping penalty on the return to put the ball back on the 11. Dennis Brett swept right end for 3 yards on first down and on the next play, Alan Stone fumbled the ball after being hit by a hoard of Lobo tacklers. Longview recovered on the 11 of Jesuit. Leo McCoy carried once in the middle of the line for no gain and on the next play he swept left end on a touchdown run of 11 yards. Thomas added the extra point and the Lobos led, 14 to 0, with 9:03 left in the second quarter.

Taylor kicked off and Brett returned the ball to the Jesuit 29. On the very next play Stone fumbled and the Lobos recovered on the Jesuit 28.

McCoy swept right end for 25 yards on the next play down to the Jesuit 3-yard line. McCoy scored two plays later on a plunge from the one on which he knocked three Jesuit Rangers backwards over the goal line. Thomas again booted a perfect kick through the uprights to make the score 21 to 0 in favor of the Lobos with 8 minutes and 3 seconds left to go in the first half. That completed all of the scoring in the first half.

After the following kickoff, Jesuit made a first down and then Barker fumbled and the Lobos recovered again. This time on the Jesuit 45. The Lobos received an illegal procedure penalty on the first play and then could only gain 7 yards in the next three plays and Stone punted to Unis who lost three yards on the return when he was tackled by Cook. Jesuit drove to their own 35 just as the first half ended.

Longview kicked off to start the second half and Unis returned to his own 27. After exchange of punts the Lobos lost the ball when Fambles fumbled and Jesuit recovered on the Lobo 20-yard line where they faced fourth down and 10 yards to go. Ranger quarterback Lucido's pass was barely overthrown to Mark Wallace who had outran the Lobo defenders to the end zone and made a futile dive for the errant pass but couldn't quite reach it.

The Lobos took over on the 20 but they had to punt when they could only gain 6 yards in three downs. Stone's punt was high and wobbly and only carried 16 yards to the Longview 42. The Rangers couldn't move the ball and Longview took the ball on downs at the Lobo 34.

Longview drove 66 yards in 18 plays to score their final touchdown of the night to make the final 28 to 0. Steve Gaddis passed to Henry Williams for a nine yard touchdown pass. Thomas kicked the extra point once more. The Lobos completed dominated the game as they out rushed Jesuit 205 yards to 84. Longview had a total offense of 215 yards while they completely dominated the gamers to only 70 yards the whole game.
