| LUFKIN - Clint Humphreys was a winner Friday night, and he must have known it when many, many of his Longview Lobos walked over to him in the dressing room and said, "Coach Humphreys, I just want to tell you how much we appreciate you."
The Lobos also won the scoreboard, 37 to 3, over Lufkin's Panthers in the final District 14-AAAA game for both schools. When the players arrived in the dressing room there wasn't one Lobo that was not bring. It was the final Lobo game for 25 seniors. It would have taken a man with a heart of steel to not have been impressed with this fine group. "It's a game I'll remember a long time," a happy but "emotionally drained" Lobo coach Humphreys said pridefully of the Lobos' 37 to 3 victory over the Panthers. "In all my years of coaching I have never been around a group of boys I'm more proud of than this team," the Lobo mention said. "This group of boys are very close and they have worked and worked this year to be the best, Longview can be mighty proud of them." Coach Humphreys and his staff shook hands with the Lobo players. "You're really a fine one. Good luck to you," Humphreys said to the boys. The Lobos close out the year with an 8-2-0 record and a 5-2-0 District 14-AAAA mark. Lufkin completed the season with a 5-5-0 record and a 3-4-0 district mark. Coach Humphreys said his players will report to the Lobo Fieldhouse Monday afternoon to check in their equipment and will be goven off until Firday, Nov. 30 when the winter offseason program will start for the Sophomores and juniors. The Lobos, who only had to punt once the entire contest, added 317 yards to their seasonal rushing stats. Longview rushed 55 times, gaining 338 yards and losing only 21. Mike Mock ended his high school career on a very happy note. The 195-pounder crashed the line 20 times, grinding out 150 yards. Mock had his longest carry of the year on his final touchdown - a 49-yard scamper. Fullback Danny Majors picked up 59 yards on 13 carrie for a 4.5 norm. Majors scored on a two-yard blast in the second quarter for the second Lobo touchdown. Danny also intercepted a Delrick Brown aerial late in the contest and returned the ball 44 yards for the final Lobo touchdown of the year. Majors ironically enough, scored the first touchdown of the second and the last. Wingback Ricky Watts raced for 64 yards on but three carries. Watts may be one of the Lobos to watch next season. He is but a junior. Watts had runs of 24, 44 and minus four. The speedy 165-pounder scored one of the Longivew touchdowns on the 24 yard jaunt. Quarterback Steve Gaddis, who will start basketball training this week, passed six times hitting on two occasions for 60 yards. Gaddis fired a 58-yard scoring strike to Scott Cole for the fourth Longview touchdown. Majors led the Longview barrage with 12 points against Lufkin. Mock was credited with 11 points, while Ricky Watts, Scott Cole, and Bobby Hunter rounded out the scoring. Lufkin scored the first points of the game, following a Mike Mock fumble. The Panthers began the drive on the Lobo 37-yard line and moved as close as the Lobo 21. But a stiff Longview defense, headed by Reggie Reese and Mitch Motley, stopped the Panthers cold. Bobby Harrison was called on for a 39-yard field goal and with 8:53 left in the first half, Lufkin enjoyed a 3 to 0 lead. The lead was short lived however. It took the Lobos exactly two minutes to drive 80 yards. The drive could be credited for Ricky Watt. On the first play of the drive Mike Mock moved the ball to the Longivew 24. From there, the Lobos went without huddle. Center Danny Gresham flipped the ball to Watts, who went behind some fine blocking to the Panthers 32, a 44-yard gain. Mock carried the ball eight yards to the Lufkin 24. Steve Gaddis called Watts' number again and the speedy junior responded with a 24-yard touchdown run around left end. Danny Majors must be given credit for taking care of two Lufkin players with one block. Mock booted the extra point to give the Lobos a 7 to 3 lead with 6:46 on the first quarter clock. It looked as though Lufkin was going to make a game of it when they moved from their own 34 to the Lobo 1. But that stiff Lobo defense rose to the occasion and forced Bobby Harrison into duty for a field goal attempt. Defensive end Jackie James rushed in and blocked the attempt and Llewellyn Fambles, returned to the Longview 19. The M-boys (Mock and Majors) then moved the ball to the Lufkin two where Majors tripped in. Mike Mock had the big gainer on the drive on a 22-yard trek that gave the Lobos a first down at the Lufkin 32. Things went from bad to worse for the Panthers. After failing to get a first down on their next possession, Lufkin was forced to punt. Longview took over on their own 29 and promptly went to work. Using three, four and give yard bursts, the Lobos moved to the Lufkin 34. A holding infraction was tacked on the Lobos moving the ball back to the Lufkin 49. Mock replaced Steve Gaddis at quarterback and on a third and 21, bolted 49 yards for the third Lobo score of the evening. Mock's kicked sailed true and with 1:58 left in the first half, Longview held a 21 to 3 advantage. Following intermission, Longview cranked up again. Lufkin was forced to punt to the Longview 27. From there the M-boys moved the ball to the Lobo 42. Gaddis spotted split end Scott Cole streaking to the gasoline and delivered a strike. Cole caught the ball on the Lufkin 35 and outran the Panther defense to the end zone. Bobby Hunter crashed in the two-point conversion giving Longview a 2 to 3 lead with 6:49 showing in the third period. Linebacker Danny Majors was the next scoring figure. Majors picked off a Lufkin pass at the Panther 44 and loped the entire distance for the score. Mike Mock zipped in for two points ending the Lobo scoring at 37 to 3. Defensive end Reggie Reese and defensive tackle James Stephens made things go from bad to worse for Lufkin. Aided by the rest of the talented Longview defense, Reese and Stephens held Lufkin to just eight yards rushing in the second half. The Panthers were only able to gain 67 yards in the air in second half action. John Glover, John Fuller, Mike Boyd and Steve Taylor put in an outstanding game as did Lawrence Miller, Llewellyn Fambles and Donny Smith. The Marching Lobo Band and the Lufkin Panther Band united their forces for a very fine and enjoyable halftime performance. Assisted by the Longviewettes and the Panther Pride, the two schools, 500 strong, gave a patriotic tribute. |
