TEXARKANA PUTS BITE ON LOBOS
LONGVIEW - Texarkana learned you have to hold a Lobo under water a long time to drown him, but once the Tigers recognized that fact of nature, Friday's hunt in Lobo Stadium was a success.

Happiness is smiting Longview's Lobos before a hometown crowd. That's just what Texarkana's Tigers did to the Lobos here Friday night before an estimated 5,000 chilled fans. Actually, the Tigers edged the Lobos, 38 to 34.

Lobo-slaying may be a thing of the past as far as most folks were concerned, but Friday night Texarkana proved it's still a mighty popular sport.

Texarkana just did all kind of slaying as the Tigers slashed and sliced the Lobo defensive secondary late into the fall turf. Texarkana is now 7-2-0 for the season and 5-1-0 in District 14-AAAA play. The Lobos drop to 7-2-0 for the season and 4-2-0 in district.

It was an offensive game and the two clubs just forgot about defense. It has been years since these two fine clubs played so much offense.

The Tigers had three points in the first quarter to be the first team this season to score on the Lobos in the first quarter. However, the Tigers went on to score 14 points in the second and third quarters. Then in the final period added seven more points. Longview's Lobos had seven points in the first and second periods. A six point run in the third and a 14 pointer in the final quarter.

Longview was at the Tiger 28 yard line when the clock ran out to end the game. However, the game officials nearly lost control of the 14-AAAA contest late in the game. The Lobos lost the ball game and the Tigers went home with the victory. But Texarkana's players and coaches were confused about the number of calls as were many Lobos and their fans. It was just a poor job by the game officials.

Longview's offensive machine made the yards but not the points and that is the name of the game. Tailback Mike Mock carried the ball 31 times for a net of 176 yards and scored four touchdowns. Fullback Danny Majors had 14 carries for 99 yards and wingback Ricky Watts had seven tries for 80 yards. The trio of back played a great game. Fans and coaches could not ask for more.

It was a great game and the Tigers should be given a pat-on-the back. They came to play and so did the Lobos. But any time these two schools meet for a sporting even, they play to win. It was Texarkana's time to win here Friday night.

Longview had 372 yards rushing and 58 passing for 446 yards of total offense. The Lobos also had 27 first downs. Texarkana had 21 first downs, 158 yards rushing and 209 passing for a total 367 yards.

Defensive end Reggie Reese was a big standout on defense for the Lobos. He made many timely tackles.

Texarkana put the first points on the scoreboard in the first quarter on a 38-yard field goal by Randall Rogers with 5:49 on the clock.

Longview came back and marched 83 yards in eight plays to score. Tailback Mock scored from eight yards out over right tackle and Mock also kicked the extra point to give the Lobos the lead, 7 to 3 with 1:59 left in the first quarter.

End Randall Rogers passed to Reginald Scott for a 45-yard touchdown with 6:34 left in the second quarter. Rogers also kicked the extra point to give the Tigers the lead, 10 to 7.

Longview once again took the kickoff from the Tigers and marched 64 yards and seven plays to score. Tailback Mock went over let tackle from seven yards out for the touchdown. Mock kicked the extra point and the Lobos had the lead, 14 to 10 with 3:38 left in the second quarter.

Quarterback Don Morris scored the Tigers' second touchdown with only 14 seconds left in the second quarter on a left end run. Rogers kicked the extra point and Texarkana led, 17 to 14. The drive covered 59 yards in 10 plays.

Wingback Reginald scored for Texarkana in the third quarter on a 17-yard run. Rogers' kick was good and the Tigers had a 24 to 14 lead in the third quarter. The drive covered 30 yards in just three plays. With 7:29 on the clock, the Lobos did not give up.

Tailback Mock scored from five yards for the Lobos in the third quarter. Mock's run for the two pointer failed with 3:40 left on the clock. The drive this time covered 69 yards in 10 plays. Texarkana led, 24 to 20.

Quarterback Don Morris passed to Reginald Scott for a 75-yard run pass play for a touchdown with 2:15 left in the third quarter. Rogers' kick was good and the Tigers had a 31 to 20 lead.

Wingback Ricky Watts scored for the Lobos on an 18-yard run around the right side of the line with 10:47 left in the game. Bob Hunter scored the two-point conversion, 31 to 28.

Fullback Mike Young scored for the Tigers on a five yard run with 7:46 left in the game. Rogers' kick was good and the Tigers had a 38 to 28 lead. The drive covered 72 yards in eight plays.

Tailback Mock score the final touchdown of the night on a 19-yard run. Quarterback Gaddis' pass failed of the two-pointer with 6:13 left in the game. The drive covered 75 yards in five plays. A big gainer in the drive was a 29-yard pass from Mock to Scott Cole.

Starting with 4:42 left in the game it was one big mixup. It would take a book to tell you about the remaining minutes of the game. Most folks that were not there would not even believe the facts. So, the story ends here.
