SLEEPING GIANTS SLUMBERS, LOBOS ROLL OVER MAVS
MARSHALL - Longview High football coach Clint Humphreys' worst fears weren't confirmed Friday night when the Lobos powered off with Marshall before a packed house in Maverick Stadium.

The sleeping giant did not awake.

Longview smeared Marshall even worse than experts expected, winning 49 to 24.

Coach Humphreys had said earlier in the week he feared Marshall The Mavericks were a sleeping giant, he said. They weren't. Asleep, maybe. But a giant, no.

"I'm just thankful for the win and I thought everybody played very well," he said, as he viewed the film of the game Saturday morning. "We made some mistakes. But they can be corrected this week in training."

The Lobo mentor admitted he was surprised at the Lobos scoring 49 points against Marshall.

"I never dreamed we could get that many points on Marshall." he noted. "Our backs did a great job in moving the ball and the linemen just opened the holes for them. It was great team work by all."

Tailback Mike Mock, who was the leading rusher for the Lobos with 194 yards on 22 tries for an 8.8 yard average, scored three touchdowns and passed for one. Fullback Donny Majors, who played hs finest game of his career, had 93 yards on 13 tries for a 7.1 average and scored one touchdown. Wingback Ricky Watts scored twice and end Joe Alford scored one touchdown. Mock kicked seven of seven extra points.

Jerry Bobo had himself a time. He is the team's kickoff man and centers the ball on deep snap. Bobo kicked off eight times.

The Lobos had 65 rushing plays for a net of 392 yards (had three minus yards) for a 6.0 yards per try. Longview had 58 yards passing for a total of 448 yards. The Lobos had 24 first downs.

Marshall was held to only nine first downs (four in the first half and 83 yards rushing and 24 passing). Marshall had a net of 117 yards rushing and 78 passing for a grand total of 192 yards. Marshall completed five of 19 yards and ha done pass intercepted by Lawrence Miller.

Mike Mock punted five times for the Lobos for 227 yards for a 45.4 yards average.

The Lobos took a 28 to 6 halftime lead. Longview had 14 first downs, 247 yards rushing and 13 passing in the first half. Mock had 13 carries for 129 yards in the first half and Majors had nine carries for 79 yards.

Marshall won the coin toss and elected to receive. Jerry Bobo kicked off to the Mavericks and Victor Williams took the ball at the 14 and returned it to the 35 to set up shop.

Newt Dorsett on first try was stopped. Dorsett carried to the 39 on second down for a gain of four. On third down, quarterback Scott Baldwin was stopped for a minus eight - back to the Marshall 31. So on fourth down, Rickey Godwin punted the ball down field and Lawrence Miller took the ball at the Longview 44 yard line.

Longview went to work at their own 44 with 10:28 reading on the clock. Fullback Danny Majors went off right tackle to the Marshall 43 for a gain of 13 yards. Three plays later tailback Mock broke dot the right of the field and went 38 yards to the Marshall one before he was tackled. At the one yard line Mock went into the end zone for the Lobo touchdown. Mock kicked the extra point and the Lobos led, 7 to 0, with 8:27 left in the first quarter The drive covered 56 yards in five plays.

Bobo kicked off to the Mavericks and Leonard Jones took the ball at the four. He dashed to the 32 yard line and fumbled the ball. Mike Boyd (who attended Marshall Jr. High) recovered the pigskin for the Lobos at the 32 with 8:20 reading on the clock in the first quarter.

At the 32 the Lobos couldn't be stopped. Fullback Majors carried the ole ball to the 29. Mock went over right tackle to the 23. On third down and one, Majors broke through the Marshall line on a 23 yard run for the touchdown. Mock kicked the extra point and the Lobos led, 14 to 0, with 7:22 on the clock in the first quarter. The drive covered three plays and 32 yards.

Bobo once again kicked off. However, he kicked twice because the Lobos were offsides on the first try. Marshall took over on their own 25 yard line. On fourth down Rickey Godwin punted the ball.The ball was fumbled by a Lobo player and Marshall recovered at the Lobo 37 yard line. Five plays later quarterback Baldwin's pass was picked off by Lawrence Miller at the Lobo two yard line to stop the drive.

With 3:39 left in the first quarter the Lobos put their offensive machine to work. Fullback Majors plowed his way through the Mavericks to the 18 yard line for a gain of 16. Majors again was given the ball by quarterback Gaddis to the 22 for four more yards. Then tailback Mock went off right tackle to the 28 for a first down and six yards.

Mock went to the 32 and Majors to the 40 for another first down. Mock pushed his way to the 44 of the Lobos and Majors then carried to the 46. On third down and four at the 46, Mock went to the left side of the line and carried the ball to the 33 of Marshall and had a gain of 15 yards. However, Longview was given a 15 yard line penalty that moved the ball back to the 48 of Marshall.

At the Marshall 48, tailback Bobby Hunter went to the 44 to end the first quarter of action with the Lobos leading, 14 to 0. Majors carried the ball the next two carries on carries of five and six yards to the 33. At the 33, Mock broke away from several Mavericks and went to the 14 yard line for a gain of 19 yards. At the fourteen, Mock pushed his way to the 12. At the 12 Mock went into the end zone for the touchdown over the left side of the line. Mock kicked the extra point and the Lobos led, 21 to 0, with 10:35 on the clock in the second quarter. The drive went 13 yards in 14 plays.

Bobo again kicked off to Marshall with 10:26 on the clock in the second quarter. Marshall was forced to punt on fourth down at the 20. Lawrence Miller fielded the ball at the Lobo 47 with 8:57 on the clock.

The Lobos ran three offensive plays and on fourth down Mock punted the ball. The pigskin was fumbled by Vitor Williams at the Marshall 15 yard line and was recovered by James Maeger.

Tailback Bobby Hunter carried to the 13 and then on second down quarterback Gaddis hit tight end Joe Alford on a 13-yard touchdown bomb in the right end zone. Mock kicked the extra point and the Lobos led, 28 to 0, with 6:20 on the clock in the second quarter.

Mr. Bobo again kicked off. Victor Williams took the ball at the eight and returned to the 34. On the first play front he 34, tailback Newt Dorsett went 66 yards for a Marshall touchdown. Doug Williamson's extra point kicked failed. So with 6:02 on the clock in the second quarter, the Mavericks were on the scoreboard, 28 to 6.

With three seconds on the clock before halftime the Lobos attempted a field goal. Mike Mock's kick was touched by a Maverick and the ball fell short of the uprights. Mock was kicking from the Marshall 34 yard line.

Marshall came back in the third quarter with a little more spurt. On the opening kickoff by Doug Williamson the ball was fumbled by Mike White at the one and the ole pigskin rolled into the end zone. White fell on the ball and so did the Mavericks on top of White for a safety with 11:53 on the clock, 28 to 8.

Bobo kicked off once again. Marshall took over at the 45. However, on fourth down Godwin punted and the Lobos took over at their own 26.

Mock, Majors and Hunter carried the ball to the Lobo 41 yard line. However, on fourth and six, Mock punted and the ball was officially placed at the three. Marshall on the second play at the six fumbled the ball by Newt Dorsett. John Globver hit Dorsett so hard that the ball bounced from his arms. Larry Williams recovered the ball at the Marshall six.

At the six Mock went into the end zone for the touchdown and he also kicked the extra point, 35 to 8, with 6:44 left in the third quarter.

Bobo, who was tired of kicking off, did his job again. The Mavericks took over at the 31. On fourth down at the 33 Marshall punted the ball. Longview took over at their own 33 with 5:44 on the clock in the third.

Longview reserves entered the ball game. Sophomre Llwellyn Fambles turned in a fine job in the backfield. On the seventh play at the Marshall 36 yard line quarterback Gaddis hit wingback Ricky Watts for a touchdown pass. Mock kicked the extra point, 42 to 8, with 2:57 on the clock in the third period.

Bobo kicked off again. Marshall went to work at the 38 of the Mavericks. In 11 plays the Mavericks were on the scoreboard. Quarterback Baldwin hit Youree Culberson on a nine yard pass for the touchdown. Dorsett scored the two point conversion to make it 42 to 16 with 11:52 left in the game.

Tailback Dorsett scored another Marshall touchdown on a seven yard run with 6:22 left in the game. Baldwin passed to Culberson for the two point conversion, 42 to 24.

Doug Williamson kicked off to the Lobos and Longview took over at the 25 yard line. In 12 plays the Lobos moved 75 yards for the final touchdown of the night. Mock, Majors and Hunter carried the ball to the seven yard line. On third and seven, tailback Mock took a pitchout from quarterback Gaddis. Mock found Wicky Watts open in the end zone for a seven yard touchdown pass. Mock kicked the extra point and the Lobos had a 49 to 24 victory with 33 seconds left in the contest.
