MOCK SPARKS LONGVIEW 24-0 WIN OVER HILLCREST
LONGVIEW - It wasn't exactly a thing of beauty, but a drowning man doesn't complain about the looks of the guy who throws him a lifeline.

That's exactly how Mike Mock, Danny Majors, Dennis Weitzel, John Glover and all the other happy Longview Lobos were feeling after rudely imposing of Dallas Hillcrest.

It might not have been too pretty in execution, but it sure was nice. The reason: Longview for the second straight year has defeated the Big D boys and are now 3-0 for the 1973 football season.

With quarterback Mock and linebacker Majors the ring leaders, the Lobos enjoyed every mite of their 24-0 win over Hillcrest here Friday night in Lobo Stadium.

The Lobos now have posted wins over Dallas Jesuit, 14 to 0, and La Marque, 9 to 6.

The Lobos had an open date on Friday night, Sept. 28, and will start District 14-AAAA action at Marshall on Friday night, Oct. 5.

Shutouts have become a rarity in modern-day schoolboy football.

Sophisticated offenses make putting zero on the scoreboard about as rare as snowballs down yonder.

But Longview's much-maligned defense threw one at Hillcrest Friday night. It was the second team from Big D to go home without scoring a single point. Dallas Jesuit in the season opener was blanked, 14 to 0, by Longview.

Longview defending troops had to be pleased. Coach Clint Humphreys, assistants Jim Reed, Doug Cox, Dean Hesse, Maurice Cook, etc. etc.

The Lobos led 17 to 0 at halftime. The Lobos had six first downs, 164 yards rushing and 11 yards passing. Hillcrest was able to make only one first down, 18 yards rushing and 17 passing.

Longview went to work very quickly when they got the ball in the first quarter following a Hillcrest punt with 10 minutes left on the clock in the first quarter. Quarterback Mock and the Lobos marched down the field like General Sherman tanks. On the second play Mock broke through the middle of the line and rushed down the field to the eight from the 48 of Longview for a gain of 44. At the eight yard line, Mike White carried to the six. Then Mock pushed his way to the four. On third down the Lobos were given a five yard penalty. So the ball was placed at the nine. On third and nine, Mock went to the air and passed across the scrimmage line. So, the Lobos were given another five yard penalty.

Coach Humphreys elected to go for a field goal. The ball was placed at the 20-yard line and Mock booted the ball through the uprights and the Lobos had a 3 to 0 lead with 5:56 left in the first quarter. Mock's kick was a 30 yard field goal.

Hillcrest quarterback Jon Aune was forced to punt on fourth down from his 31 yard line. Well the old ball took a Lobo bounce and nearly rolled back behind the punter. Well...not quite. He kicked from the 31 and he Lobos took over the Hillcrest 3. The kick was good for two yards.

On the first play the Lobos were issued a five yard penalty and the ball moved back to the 38. So, tailback Bobby Hunter took the hand off from quarterback Mock and the talented Hunter turned on the speed and went the 38 yards for the touchdown on the left side of the file. Mock's kick was good and the Lobos had a 9 to 0 lead. With 3:53 left in the first quarter, the Lobo fans were feeling a lot better.

Longview's second touchdown was set up following a Hillcrest punt and the Lobos took over at the Longview 45-yard line. In seven plays quarterback Steve Gaddis went into the end zone over left tackle for the touchdown. Mock kicked the extra point, 17 to 0. With 10:58 on the clock in the second quarter, it was all Longview. A big gainer on the drive was a 14 yard run by Mock on the first try.

Longview's final touchdown of the night came in the third quarter. The Lobos were forced to punt on a fourth down by Mock at the 37 of Longview. Mock punted and was hit by two blockers. So, the Lobos took over at the Hillcrest 49 yard line.

On third and six at the 45 of Hillcrest, quarterback Mock hit Ricky Watts at the four yard line on a 41 yard bomb. It was a great catch by the ace receiver. At the four yard line Mock carried to the one yard line. Then on fourth and one, quarterback Steve Gaddis on a hand off to Mock scored over left guard with 1:37 left in the third period. Mock kicked the extra point, 24 to 0.

Longview's defensive unit of Reggie Reese, Jackie James, James Stephens, John Glover, Danny Majors, Larry Williams, Mike Mock, John Fuller, Scott Cole, Mike Boyd and Steve Taylor turned in fine jobs.

All players for the Lobos saw action. Quarterback Gaddis must be given a big pat on the back for a grand job. He is going to make the Lobos a fine quarterback. With game experience this kid is going to move the Lobos to many touchdowns.
