DEFENSE GIVES LIFT, LONGVIEW DEFEATS LA MARQUE
LONGVIEW - Stack them up head to head, nose to nose, and from any angle it was a whale of a football game here Friday night in Lobo Stadium.

And nose to nose is the way it went under the daylight bright mercury vapor lights. Longview won, of course, 9-6, but the Lobos shed blood for it.

It was about the type of game Coach Clint Humphreys expected. Meaning rugged.

The whispers are getting louder. The 1973 Lobo football team is beginning to look like something more than just pretty good. The Lobo defense rose up with some big plays and didn't give up when the going got rough. That's where it all starts.

Longview's mighty defensive unit really came to play against the giants of South Texas. It wasn't a picnic for the Lobos and not even the Lobo fans could rest until the last few seconds. Only the weak hearts left in the fourth quarter. It was that kind of contest.

La Marque has a real fine ball club. One Coach Tom Williams and his fans can be proud of. They also came to play. A few mistakes here and there and the Lobos went to their Longview homes with the victory.

Tailback Stanley Dickson was the big gun for the Cougars. He was almost at times too good to be true. The Lobo defensive unit is very happy Mr. Dickson will not be here for another game this season.

Longview's defensive team led by Reggie Reese, Jackie James, James Stephens, John Glover, Danny Majors, Larry Williams, Mick Mock, Lawrence Miller, Scott Cole, Mike Boyd, Steve Taylor and Donny Smith came through when the chips were down.

The Lobos went to the dressing quarters at halftime leading 3 to 0. This was the same score a year ago at La Marque when Mike Mock booted a 32-yard field goal during a rain storm.

However, Friday night it was not raining. But La Marque was here and they came with power in size and power in speedy backs.

Halfback Deon Davis fumbled the ole pigskin for La Marque with 9:41 left in the first quarter at the La Marque 39 yard line. Safety Steve Taylor recovered the ball for Longview. It was the sixth play of the game that saw Davis fumble the ball.

On the seventh play the Lobos elected to go for a field goal at the La Marque 23 yard line. Mike Mock kicked the 40 harder through the uprights and the Lobos led, 3 to 0, with six minutes even to go in the first quarter.

The Lobos had one first down in the first half and 27 yards rushing. La Marque had eight first downs and 62 yards rushing and 23 passing. For the game the Lobos had four first downs for 90 yards rushing and 40 passing. La Marque had 12 first downs, 107 yards rushing and 91 passing for 198 yards total offense.

Quarterback Mock carried 18 times for 54 yards. Tailback Elbert Hoyt carried seven times for 14 net yards.

Longview's lone touchdown of the night was scored by fullback Danny Majors from the one yard line with 6:01 left in the fourth quarter. Steve Gaddis' pass for the two pointer failed.

Longview's touchdown was set up when safety Mike Boyd recovered a fumble from fullback Greg Giles at the 14 yard line with 6:17 on the clock. On the second play Mock took the ball down to the one from a pitchout from quarterback Gadddis on the left side of the field. From the one Majors went over right guard for the touchdown.

La Marque's lone touchdown was set up when quarterback Gaddis fumbled the ball and Ronnie Zeeringue recovered the ball at the La Marque 34 yard line.

With 2:43 on the clock the Cougars moved down the field. Quarterback Richard Sutton hit end Carlton Mayeaux in the left end zone for the touchdown with 38 seconds left in the game. Lance Stevens' kick failed and the Lobos still had the lead, 9 to 6.
