BIG GUNS TRIGGER LOBOS PAST JESUIT
LONGVIEW - Longview's prison wall defense was so confining against Dallas Jesuit Friday night that it should have inspired a Johnny Cash song.

Old fashioned, bust 'em-in-the-brestplate tackling was behind Longview's 14-0, victory in the season opener for both schools.

There have been nights when Lobo tacklers swarmed about the place more vigorously perhaps, but these got the job done as well as it could be done. They had the door to the end zone locked, and that's the name of the game.

You could almost hear the strains of "Happy Days Are Here Again" among the crowd as the Lobos posted their victory over Jesuit's Rangers.

Longview's brilliant senior quarterback Mike Mock engineered the win for the Lobos. Mock completed three of four for 44 yards. He carried the ball 10 times for 29 net yards.

Fullback Danny Majors carried for 54 yards on 12 tries.

The hot weather Friday night did slow both teams down. Even the fans in the stands were seen fanning with the officials programs to keep cool.

The Lobos scored their 14 points in the first quarter of action and played great defense the remaining quarters to keep the Rangers from the Lobo goal line. It was the kind of contest more coaches expected to see in the season opener. Lobos made some mistakes. But the mistakes can be corrected this coming week as they start making ready for the La Marque here on Friday night, Sept. 14th at 8 p.m.

The Lobo defensive unit is way ahead of the offensive unit and this isn't something that the coaches do not know Training new backs to fill in for the departed boys like Cecil Walton, Larry Harkless, Chuck Boyd and Calvin Portley that graduated last May.

The Lobo defensive team of left end Reggie Reese, left tackle James Stephens, right end Gary Atkins, right tackle John Glover, line backer Danny Majors, linebacker Larry Williams, linebacker Mike Mock, cornerback LAwrence Miller, cornerback Scott cole, safety Mike Boyd and safety Steve Taylor.

The Lobos in the first half had eight first downs and Jesuit only two. However, the Lobos had 81 yards rushing and Jesuit 83. Longivew had 44 yards passing and Jesuit had zero. However, the Lobos led, 14-0, at halftime.

For the contest the Lobos compiled 140 yards rushing and 44 passing for a total of 184 yards. Jesuit had 149 yards rushing and four yards passing for a net of 153 yards.

Quarterback Mock was called upon to punt five times for 219 yards and posted a 43.8 yards average.

Dallas won the toss and elected to receive. Jerry Bobo kicked off to the Rangers and Richard Bates took the pigskin at the 21 and returned to the 35 to set up shop.

On the second play halfback Steve Barker fumbled the ball at the Dallas 49 yard line and cornerback Lawrence Miller recovered for the Lobos with 11:34 left on the clock in the first quarter at the Dallas 49.

In nine plays and 49 yards the Lobos were on the scoreboard. Tailback Elbert Hoyt got things going for the Lobos as he carried for one to the 48. On the third play, Mock on a keeper went up the middle and carried the ole ball to the 32 for 16 yards and a first down. Bobby Hunter sailed up the middle to the 26 for a gain of six and the Hunter was given the ball once again and he went off right guard to the 23. On the next play the Dallas team was issued a five yard penalty and moved the ball to the 18. Once again, Dallas was issued a five yard penalty and moved the ball to the 13. Danny Majors caught the Rangers off guard and went to the seven for a first down.

From the seven, it was Hunter and Majors. Majors on a third down from the one went over left guard for the touchdown with 6:50 left in the first quarter. Mock kicked the extra point and the Lobos led, 7-0.

Longview kicked off to the Rangers and Jesuit took over at their own 19 yard line. Quarterback Joe Unis was caught by defensive end Gary Akins for a loss of one back to the 18. Anthony Harden was a little more lucky against the Lobos as he made it to the 21 for three yards. Unis was snowed by the Lobos and back to the 18 and lost the ball on a fumble. Gary Akins came up with the pigskin.

With 5:27 on the clock in the first quarter the Lobos once again had the ball. On the first play quarterback Mock found Keith Pittman open over center and shot the ball into his arms. Pittman turned on the speed and went into the end zone for the touchdown with 5:22 left on the clock in the first quarter. Mock kicked the extra point and the Lobos led, 14-0.

The two Lobo touchdowns took only one minute and 28 seconds to score.

Back up quarterback Steve Gaddis saw a limited amount of action for the Lobos.

Danny Majors was a big standout for the Lobos in the backfield. With more games experience he will be a fine running back. Hoyt and Hunter turned in fine jobs.

The Lobo offensive line must be given a pat on the back for a fine job. Men like Keith Pittman, Dennis Weitzel, James Maeger, Danny Gresham, Doug Roach, Reggie Reese and Joe Alford.

It was a victory and the kind that starts the season off with a great feeling. The coaches were played with the game victory and will start Saturday morning making plans for the contest with La Marque.
