PLANO'S WILDCATS POLISH OFF LONGVIEW, 27-0
DALLAS - The roof leaked but the old homestead held a special welcome for Plano's Wildcats here Friday night in the giant colorful Cotton Bowl.

Plano killed Longview's Lobos, 27-0, in a Class AAAA bi-district contest.

Plano, who won Class AA State Championships in 1965 and 1967 and won the AAA crown in 1971, will advance to the AAAA regional playoff next week. Plano will meet either Killeen or Houston Westchester. The bi-district game between Killeen and Westchester will be played Saturday night at College Station's Kyle Field.

Plano, who won the District 12-AAAA crown and posted a 9-1-0 season mark, really got all the breaks in the contest. Longview's errors hurt them too.

The Lobos of coach Clint Humphreys closed out the 1972 season with a 10-1-0 record. Not bad for a team that was not picked to win the district championship. The Lobos are a young ball club and will be returning many, many of these boys for the 1973 season. Lobo fans can stand tall and be proud of these fine group of young men.

Plano's first touchdown of the night came late in the first quarter after taking over at their own 42 yard line following a Mike Mock punt of 34 yards. Quarterback Jeff Brumbaugh, who guided the Wildcats to the state AAA championship last fall, went to the airways on the first down but the attempted pass was way over the head of the intended receiver. Then on the next play Sophomore halfback Tony Wallis took a pitch out from Brumbaugh and rambled 35 yards around right end to the Lobo 23 yard line.

Fullback Rucker Lewis, 190-pound senior, picked up four yards to the 21 yard line on first down and Wallis got the call and responded with a 21 yard run around left end for the Plano touchdown. Ricky Tatum, a 160-pound junior, booted the extra point through the Cotton Bowl uprights and the Wildcats had a 7 to 0 lead with 4:27 to go in the first quarter. The touchdown drive covered 58 yards in four plays.

Nothing went right for the Lobos in the second quarter either as they stopped the Wildcats at the Lobo 37 yard line and forced a punt on fourth down. However, a Lobo player fell into the kicker, Davis Melson and drew a 15-yard penalty and the officials moved the ball to the Lobo 22 yard line.

On first down quarterback Brumbaugh connected with end Doyle Terry, 165-pound senior, for an 18-yard pass-run combination that carried Plano to the Longview four yard line. Then quarterback Brumbaugh took the snap from center on the next play and on a busted play went over left guard for the four yard touchdown. Brumbaugh kicked the extra point and Plano had a 14 to 0 lead with 3:35 remaining on the clock in the second period.

Plano continued its awesome running attack in the second half and scored the third touchdown of the game in the closing minutes of the third period.

After taking over at the Longview 23 yard line following a 13 yard punt by Mike Mock, it took the wildcats only four plays to score. Halfback Glenn Sanders picked ups tough two yards on first down, Rucker Lewis got five to the 16 yard line and then went for 15 more yards on the next play to the Lobo one yard line. Brumbaugh scored the touchdown on a one yard sneak. Tatum's ice for the extra point was good and Plano surged ahead 21-0 with 3:20 left in the third period.

The Wildcats scored their final touchdown with 8:59 left in the fourth period as Lewis, who finished the evening with 123 yards rushing on 13 carries, broke five tackles on the way to a 39-yard touchdown run to put the game out of reach for the Lobos. Tatum's try for the PAT failed and the Wildcats advanced to regional by defeating Longview, 27-0.
