PRIDE OF LONGVIEW SHOWS IN DISTRICT WIN
TEXARKANA - Tailback Chuck Boyd and fullback Larry Harkless scored one touchdown each and Boyd and quarterback Cecil Walton came through with the big plays to lead the No. 7 state ranked Longview's Lobos to a 14 to 3 District 14-AAAA victory over the Texarkana Tigers here Friday night in Tiger Stadium.

The win gives the Lobos a 9-0-0 season record and clinched at least a tie for the District 14-AAAA championship and assure the Lobos a brith in the state playoffs.

The Lobos won the toss of the coin and elected to receive the opening kickoff. On their first possession the Tigers allowed the Lobos only one yard in three plays and forced the "Mean Green" to punt. Mick Mock booted the ball from his own 31 to the TIger 38 yardline where the bouncing pigskin hit a Texarkana player and Mitch Motley fell on the ball giving the Lobos good field position at the Tiger 38-yard line.

Eight plays and two first downs later, the Lobos set up shop at the Tiger seven yard line. But three successive losses found the Lobos back at their own 25-yard line. Facing fourth down and 25, Mike Mock tried a 42-yard field goal with 4:21 left in the first period that was long enough, but fell wide to the left.

Then with 5:40 left in the second quarter, Texarkana had a chance to take the lead as Tiger linebacker Paul White recovered a Cecil Walton fumble at the Lobo 24 yard line putting the Tigers into scoring position.

With first and 10 at the Lobo 24 yard line, quarterback Bobby Ables rambled to the 13 yard line for an 11 yard pick up, halfback Paul Pace got two to the 11, Garry Johnson picked up three yards to the Lobo eight, Kenneth Hampton got two more to the six and on fourth down, the Lobos took over after quarterback Ables' pass was no good.

But it didn't take the Tigers long to get another crack at scoring as Ricky Minter fell on a Longview fumble act the Lobo 30-yard line with 29 seconds left in the first half. Four plays later and with time running out in the first half Ricky Strawn booted a 32-yard field goal with three seconds showing on the clock to put the Tigers in the lead at halftime, 3-0, over the Lobos.

However, it was all Longview in the second half as Chuck Boyd and Larry Harkless scored touchdowns for the Lobos.

The Tigers received the ball to start the second half but the stubborn Lobo defense made Texarkana punt it away once more. Chuck Boyd took the Tiger's punt at the Lobo 23 yard line and he returned it five yards to the 28. In the first seven plays the Lobos drove the ball to the Texarkana 48 yard line and on first and 10 from the Tiger 48, Chuck Boyd broke through the line and rambled 43 yards to the Tiger five yard line to set up the go-ahead touchdown.

Boyd then ran for two yards to the three and on the next play, he rammed over for the touchdown from three yards out. Mike Mock kicked the PAT and Longview took the lead for the first time in the ballgame 7-3 with 5:43 left in the third period. The touchdown drive covered 72 yards in just nine plays.

Defense prevailed the remainder of the third period, but in the fourth quarter, the Lobos mounted another scoring drive to ice the game away. Texarkana had trouble moving the ball all night long and with 10:31 left in the game punted the ball away and the pigskin rolled dead at the Longview 15 yard line.

The Lobos could manage only four yards on the first two plays and then facing a third and six situation, quarterback Cecil Walton rolled out to his right and raced 46 yards to the Texarkana 35 yard line.

Five plays later, Larry Harkless busted up the middle of the Tigers' defense of the 10 yards and a touchdown. Mock's kick for the extra point sailed through and the Lobos took the commanding 14-3 lead with 5:25 left in the game. The touchdown drive covered 85 yards in only eight plays with Walton's 46 yard romp the big gainer.

Chuck Boyd was the leading ground gainer in the game with 107 yards on 21 carries.
