| LONGVIEW - Coach Clint Humphreys was a man with a weight lifted from his shoulder Friday night at Lobo Stadium.
The Longview offense had a field day against the Dragons of Nacogdoches as the Lobos blasted the visitors, 35 to 6, in a District 14-AAAA contest. The Lobo mentor was worried about his Lobos prior to the game. First, if the Lobos would be really up for the game. Second, how well the Lobos could travel on the soggy turf. However, it didn't take long until Coach Humphreys was in his easy chair. Following the Lobo - Dragon contest the Lobo coaches and players quickly learned of two big upsets in District 14-AAAA. Marshall, who carried a 1-5-0 record into Friday night's game, defeated Texarkana 21 to 0. John Tyler's Lions edged Lufkin's Panthers, 7 to 6. Now the bad next - Tyler Lee's Raiders blasted lowly Palestine, 43 to 3, in an easy contest at Rose Stadium. Longview, who is undefeated with a 7-0-0 record, is in command of the 14-AAAA race with a perfect 4-0-0 mark. Tyler Lee and John Tyler are tied for second with 3-1-0 marks each. Lufkin and Texarkana are tied for third at 2-2-0 while Palestine and Marshall each have 1-3-0 records. Nacogdoches is in the cellar with an 0-4-0 mark. Now a quick look at the District 14-AAAA race: Longview has beaten Marshall, 14 to 6; John Tyler, 25 to 12; Palestine, 28 to 0; and Nacogdoches, 35 to 6. Tyler Lee defeated Lufkin, 16 to 6; Marshall, 15 to 10; Palestine, 43 to 3; but lost to Texarkana, 16 to 0. John Tyler defeated Texarkana, 14 to 13; lost to Longview, 25 to 12; beat Marshall; 25 to 12 and the Lions edged Lufkin, 7 to 6. Texarkana lost to John Tyler, 14 to 13; beat Nacogdoches, 28 to 8; beat Tyler Lee, 16 to 0 and were blanked by Marshall, 21 to 0. The really big shootout for the Lobos will be held Friday night in Rose Stadium with Tyler Lee's Raiders starting at 7:30 p.m. The Raiders have beaten the Lobos the last three meetings. So Friday night's clash will be put as tough as ever. Beating a Coach Don Barton ball club in Rose Stadium is a must for the Lobos. Longview's unbeaten Lobos ho-humly made Nacogdoches their seventh victim here Friday night, 35 to 6, but for a delightful change on this cool October evening they caused no uneasiness among the Lobos in a homecoming audience estimated at 5,000. The state's No. 10 ranked club had things controlled all the way. Fullback Larry Harkless showed his usual brilliant talent. He scored twice for the Lobos in the first half on runs of one and 76 yards. Larry was truly the big workhorse for the Lobos as he carried the ball 21 times for 194 yards for a 9.3 yards per try. Harkless lit the fuse to the touchdown machine early in the first quarter. He scored the first touchdown of the night on a one yard run with 4:13 left in the first chapter. Mike Mock kicked the extra point and the home crowd felt a lot better, 7 to 0. The touchdown drive started on Longview's 38 yard line. In 11 plays, the Lobos scored the touchdown. Quarterback Cecil Walton, who played his finest game of the season, scored for the Lobos in the second quarter on a nine-yard run around left side of the line. Mock's extra point was good and the Lobos led 14 to 0 with 11:17 left in the second quarter. This drive started on the Lobo 35 yard line and the Lobos moved the distance in eight plays for the touchdown. Fullback Harkless addd another touchdown in the second quarter when he sped 76 yards for the Lobo touchdown. Mock's kick again was true and the Lobos elevated the lead to 21-0 with 10:19 remaining before halftime. The touchdown was set up when Calvin Portley intercepted a pass from quarterback Joe afford at the Lobo 24 yard line with 11:02 left in the second quarter. On the first play, at the 24, Harkless took the handoff from quarterback Walton and sailed 76 yards down the left side of the field for score. It took Harkless only 13 seconds to take the handoff and go the 76 yards for the touchdown. Nacogdoches' lone touchdown of the night came in the second quarter when halfback Mike Roberts scored from seven yards out with 6:59 left on the clock. Quarterback Joe Samford's pass for the two-point conversion failed. The touchdown was set up when Lobo quarterback Mike Mock fumble date ball at the Lobo 31 yard line with 8:34 left in the second quarter and the ball was recovered by Nike Precella. Four plays later the Dragons scored. Longview's fourth touchdown of the evening came when quarterback Walton hit end Mike Canida over center on a jump pass and the talented athlete dashed across the goal line for the touchdown. Mike Mock's extra punt attempt failed. However, the Lobos had a 27 to 0 lead with 5:33 left in the third quarter. The touchdown was set up when Kyle Simpson of Nacogdoches went back to punt from his 16 yard line. The ball was blocked by linebacker Mike Mock. However, the ball did travel to the Dragon 33 yard line. On the first play Walton went to the air and found Canida open for the score. Quarterback Mike Mock added a Lobo touchdown to the list on an eight yard run with 28 seconds left in the third quarter. Walton passed to Charles Chumley for the two point conversion in the left end zone to give the Lobos a 35 to 6 lead. |
