LONGVIEW'S LOBOS ROUT PALESTINE
PALESTINE - The Longview Lobos scored three second half touchdowns and along with a ferocious gang tackling defense blanked the Palestine Wildcats 28-0 in a District 14-AAAA contest here Friday night to remain undefeated.

The Lobos are now 6-0-0 on the year and stand 3-0-0 in loop action while Palestine fell to 1-5-0 on the year and 1-2-0 in district.

The Lobos wasted no time in getting points on the scoreboard as the took the opening kickoff and marched 75 yards in 16 plays and it turned out to be the only touchdown of the first half.

Fullback Larry Harkless was the workhorse in the drive carrying the ball nine times for 46 yards. However, it was Calvin Portley who took it over from one yard out for the touchdown. The kick by Mike Mock for the extra point was good and Longview took the lead 7-0 over Palestine with 4:11 remaining in the first period.

On the ensuing kickoff Palestine's Isaiah Williams took the ball at his goal line, but a bone jarring tackle separated Williams from the ball and Mock recovered the loose hide at the Palestine 16 yard line to put the Lobos in scoring position.

On the first play from scrimmage, Portley was stopped for no gain and on second down, Harkless picked up three yards to the 13 of Palestine. Then facing third and seven, Lobo quarterback Cecil Walton hit Mike Canida with a ten yard pass to the Wildcat three yard line. And on the next play Portley carried over from three yards out for what seemed to be the Lobo second touchdown. But Longview was penalized 15 yards for holding annulling the touchdown and putting the ball back the Palestine 18.

The Lobos were never able to recover from the 15 yard penalty and gave the ball over on downs to Palestine after picking up the first down at the 20 yard line.

The Wildcats' only scoring attempt came in the first half with two seconds left. Bob Herrington tried a 35-yard field goal but Danny Majors, who played a super ball game, blocked the field goal attempt and the Lobos held a slight 7-0 half at halftime.

The Lobos went in at halftime and gassed-up for a productive second half, and on their first possession took it in for a touchdown.

The touchdown was set up when Mike Mock recovered a fumble at the Palestine 32-yard line after halftime Guy Brown was forced to fumble by some more hard-hitting of the Lobo defense. Three plays later Harkless scored on a 10-yard run. Mock added the extra point and the Lobos led 14-0 with 9:54 left in the third quarter.

Longview then gave the Wildcats just four downs as they punted the ball back to the Lobos.

After two first downs that carried the ball from the Palestine 37 to the eight yard line, Portley once again had a touchdown called back after the Lobos were flagged 15 yards for clipping. But this time they came right back and scored despite the penalty. This time, Chuck Boyd carried over from one yard out for the touchdown. Mock booted the extra point and Longview surged ahead 21-0 with 4:47 left in the third period.

Longview's final touchdown of the game came in the fourth period as Danny Majors recovered his second fumble of the contest at the Palestine 40 yard line.

Mock's first pass was no good and on second down Larry Wilkins bursted off tackle for 20 yards to the Wildcat 20 yard line. Mock's second pass was completed to Charles Chumley for 18 yards to the Wildcat two yard line. And then Mock converged with Willy Brooks from two yards out for the touchdown. Mock booted his fourth straight extra point and Longview wrapped up their sixth game in a row with a 28-0 win over Palestine.

Longview picked up 20 first downs while holding Palestine in only eight, and the Lobos rushed for 249 yards and completed six of 15 passes for 71 yards for 320 total yards. The Lobos held Palestine to 111 yards rushing and 67 yards passing for a total of 178 yards.
