LONGVIEW WINS DESPITE MUD, RAIN OVER HILLCREST
LONGVIEW - One of 1972's worst-kept secrets is out in the open for all to hear: Those Longview Lobos are on the prowl again.

Coaches around District 14-AAAA probably have heard the message loud and clear. Especially if they've been nervously watching the Lobos' steady progress.

Longview showed once more here Friday night why it is a team to fear.

Flexing lots of defensive muscle the proud Lobos simply ran roughshod over Dallas Hillcrest's Panthers, 38-25.

The victory gives Longview three wins and will take a holiday net Friday night before they enter 14-AAAA action on Friday night, Oct. 6 with Marshall's Mavericks in Lobo Stadium.

The Lobos defeated Dallas Jesuit, 27-0, in the season opener and last week blanked highly ranked La Marque's Cougars, 3 to 0, on a 32-yard field goal by quarterback-linebacker Mike Mock.

Longview's lean, hungry Lobos stayed steadfastly to their diet of a balanced menu and fattened their season record.

Rain, which dampened the field at Lobo Stadium before the game and kept many potential Longview fans at home Friday night, erupted with fury in the second half to take the sting out of the fired up Panthers of Dallas.

The Lobos went to the dressing room at halftime leading 8 to 7. But that second half was something to write home about. The Lobos just couldn't be stopped and despite the amount of penalties by the officials the Lobos still beat the Panthers.

The Panthers of Dallas scored first in the high scoring contest. Left halfback Charles Turner, 150-pounder, sprinted 18 yards one left guard into the end zone for the touchdown with 4:34 left in the first quarter. Bart Owen kicked the extra point and the Panthers had a 7 to 0 lead. The drive covered 86 yards in 9 plays and the Panthers gained 20 yards in penalties against the Lobos.

The touchdown drive was set ups hen fullback Larry Harkless fumbled the ball at the Hillcrest 14 yard line and was recovered by Hillcrest with 8:29 left in the first quarter.

The Lobos had gotten the ball on the Hillcrest 27 after Irby Wigington fumbled the ball and Mike Mock recovered the ball for the Lobos at the 27 of Hillcrest. On the first play from the 27, quarterback Mock hit end Blake Johnson at the 18 for a gain of nine yards. On the next play Harkless fumbled the ball.

Fullback Larry Harkless scored Longview's first touchdown of the night in the second quarter on a 27 yard run around the left side of the line with 8:52 let in the quarter. Harkless also scored the two-point conversion on a pitch out from quarterback Mock to give the Lobos an 8 to 7 lead.

The touchdown was set up when Hillcrest quarterback Steve Shadrach fumbled the ball in the air and defensive halfback Chuck Boyd caught the ball in the air at the Hillcrest 27-yard line. On the first play Harkless went the distance for the touchdown.

Fullback Jerry Robertson, 185, plowed over the half-yard line for Hillcrest's second touchdown with 8:36 left in the third quarter. Shadrach's pass for the extra point failed.

The drive started following a Longview punt that failed to go any distance from the Lobo five to the Lobo 18 yard line by Mock. Three plays later from the half-yard line, the Panthers scored. On the third plant eh Lobso were issued a half-yard penalty from the one to the one half-yard line. However, the Panthers took the lead 13 to 8.

Fullback Harkless turned on the speed for the Lobos and went 20 yards on his next touchdown run over right guard to give the Lobos a 14 to 13 lead with 5:18 left in the third quarter. Mock passed to Roy Blair for the two-pointer, 16 to 13.

Harkless, Mr. Do-It-Everything, scored again with 2:30 left in the third quarter when he went 40 yards down the middle of the field. Mock passed to Chuck Boyd for the two point conversion. It was a great move on the part of Mock as the play was a kick. However, Mock picked the ball up quickly and found Boyd jumping high and landed the ball in his arms. The Lobos had a 24 to 13 lead.

Quarterback Mock this time scored from 26 yards out over left tackle on a keeper play. With 11:14 left in the game, the Lobos had a 30 to 13 lead. Mock kicked the extra point and the fans in the stands felt a lot better with a 31 to 13 lead. The drive went 51 yards in seven plays by the Lobos.

Tailback Calvin Portley came through with a touchdown on a pitchout from quarterback Mock that covered two yards with 9:37 left in the game. Mock kicked the extra point, 38 to 13.

With many reserves in the game, the Panthers started moving the ball. Quarterback Shadrach hit end Kenneth Johnson on a 13 yard bomb that counted for another Hillcrest touchdown. Shadrach's pass for the two point conversion failed.

Fullback Jerry Boertson scored the final touchdown of the night for the Big D team on a 48 yard run over left guard. The extra point failed. With 1:47 on the clock the Lobos had a 38 to 25 victory.
