LOBOS UPSET LA MARQUE, 3-0
LA MARQUE - The La Marque Big Bad Cougars' offense or defense didn't scare Longview's Lobos one bit here Friday night.

As a result, coach Clint Humphreys' team has a 3 to 0 victory over La Marque and remain unbeaten with a 2-0 season record.

In lieu of a rabbit, somebody pulled a Lobo out of a hat, but anyway, he ran like a rabbit against the Cougars.

The Lobo defensive unit came alive here on this rainy Friday night in South Texas. At times it was hard even to see the Lobos and Cougars in action. But players like Jerry Dancer, Calvin Portley, Chuck Boyd, Danny Majors, Larry Wilkins, Mike Mock, Willie Brooks, John Morrow, Mark McDaniel, Reggie Reese and a host of others played themselves a great ball game.

Friday night's game will go down in the Lobo history book as one of the finest games in years. It was dedication by a small group of East Texans against a giant La Marque ball club. The Cougars were a two to three touchdown favorite over Coach Humpreys' boys. However, the Lobos didn't take the game lightly and came here for the victory from the first minute of play.

Mike Mock, 185-pound senior, was the "man-of-the-hour" here Friday night as he kicked a 32-yard field goal in the second quarter to give the Lobos the winning points. Mock also was a big standout on the defensive unit.

Mike Mock's 32-yard field goal came after the Lobos had taken over on their own 41 yard line following La Marque's Joe Meza punt. On the punt, Cecil Walton fumbled, but recovered the ball at the 41 of Longview to set up first and 10 with 7:35 left in the second period.

On the first play from scrimmage tailback Calvin Portley circled left, broke two tackles and 37 yards later La Marque hauled Portley down at the Cougar 22 yard line. On the next play Portley got five more to the 17 and on second down, Portley fumbled the ball and recovered it at the La Marque 27 yard line for a 10 yard loss. However on third down, Portley came right back with a 12 yard gain to the La Marque 15.

Then Mock came to the sidelines to talk to head coach Clint Humphreys and the head mentor decided to go with the field goal facing fourth down and three. Mock then proceeded to split the uprights from 32 yards out with plenty to spare. The Lobos had taken the lead 3-0 over La Marque with 6:11 showing in the second quarter.

Longview receivers a golden opportunity to score at the end of the first half as Reggie Reese fell on a loose La Marque ball at the Cougar 44 with 1:22 remaining in the first half of play. But the Lobos were penalized 15 yards and the loss of down when he referee spotted an illegal receiver down field, putting the ball bad on the Longview 41. The first half ended 3-0 with the Lobos out front.

In the third quarter, La Marque looked as though they had recuperated from the first half whipping at the hands of the Lobos, and drove all the way to the Longview 14 yard line before Willie Brooks ended the drive by recovering a La Marque fumble giving the Lobos first and 10 at their own 14. With 8:40 left in the game, it looked as if the Cougars had another scoring opportunity as Flynn Bucy intercepted halfback Calvin Portley's pass at the 43 yard line of Longview.

After picking up a first down at the Longview 31, the Cougars could only manage six yards in three tries. Then on fourth and four, quarterback Eddie Evans dropped back to pass and was intercepted by Mike Mock at the Longview 20 yard line and returned it to the 28 of La Marque.

The Lobos were forced to give up the ball at the 29 of La Marque but came up with another big interception as Larry Wilkins intercepted the ball at the Cougar 27. Longview then ran four plays as time ran out on the clock.
