LUFKIN RUSHES PAST LONGVIEW, 30-14
LUFKIN - The Lufkin Panthers will share the District 14-AAAA championship this season with Nacogdoches and Texarkana. The Panthers defeated the Longview Lobos here Friday night, 30 to 14, to earn part of the district crown.

The game was a hard fought game and the penalties were a minimum for both sides. It was a case of who got there first with the most yardage and the breaks were a factor.

With 6:14 left in the first quarter end Gary Long took a 22-yard pass from quarterback Tommy Owen for a touchdown. The drive was good for 70 yards in 11 plays. Gary Long's kick for the extra point failed.

Longview came back with some good defensive plays and held Lufkin for the remainder of the first period.

With 10:22 left in the second quarter, Jeb Blount put the Lobos ahead when he sliced his way through a host of Lufkin defenders from the five yard line for the touchdown. Then he kicked the extra point. Longview went ahead, 7-6

Two minutes later the Panthers went ahead to stay, when tailback Clifford Davis went in from six yards out. Tommy Owen tried to pass for a two point conversion but it failed. Then with 6:32 left on the clock, Clifford Davis scored again, this time on a five yard run. This touchdown was set up when Lufkin recovered a Lobo fumble of the kickoff.

Tommy Owens attempted a pass for the two point conversion and failed.

With 3:17 left in the half, tailback Alvin Davis cracked the Lobo line for eight yards and a touchdown. Tommy Owen had two chances at the extra point with Longview drawing an offside penalty on the first but both attempts failed. Lufkin was ahead, 24 to Longview's 7.

With 1:33 remaining in the second quarter Ricky Bradley returned a Jeb Blount punt 72 yards for a touchdown. Owen tried again for the two pointer with a pass but once again, it failed.

For the rest of the half the Lobos were fired up and marched 66 yards in seven plays to score as the clock showed the time had run out. Chuck Boyd covered the final two yards of the drive for the touchdown. Blount kicked the extra point to make the scoreboard read Lufkin 30, Longview 14.

The second half was a fine display of defensive play by both teams. From the offensive side of the work horses for the Lobos Chuck Boyd, David Hiett, James williams and Jeb Blount. For the Lufkin Panthers the big ground gainer was the tailback Clifford Davis, 160-pound package of dynamite. Quarterback Tommy Owen showed his ability as field general. The Lobos displayed more real football know how in the second half than the first.

Prior to the kickoff, the Longview High Student Council presented the Lufkin Panthers a friendship token in the form of a plaque which read "A token of friendship to Lufkin High School from Longview High School, S.C. 1971-72."
