DRAGONS SLIP PAST LONGVIEW, 28-13
NACOGDOCHES - The Longview High Lobos put up a valiant stand here Friday night, but they couldn't corral Nacogdoches's Mike Colston as he ran for three touchdowns to pace the Dragons to a 28 to 13 District 14-AAAA contest played at SFASU Memorial Stadium.

The loss leaves the Lobos with a 3-3-1 season record while slipping to an 2-2-0 district mark. Nacogdoches is now 4-2-0 on the year and kept their district hopes alive as they are 3-1-0 with their only loss to powerful Texarkana.

Nacogdoches took the early game lead and it took them only two plays and one penalty to cover 48 yards as halfback. Mike Colston scored on a 34 yard run after taking a pitch from Dragon quarterback Larry Brown on the option play. The PAT kick by Brown was good and Nacogdoches took a 7-0 lead with 10:49 remaining in the opening period.

The Dragons got a big break in the drive when a Lobo pass defender was flagged for pass interference at the Lobo 35-yard line.

It didn't take the Lobos long to get points on the scoreboard as they got their first break of the game. The Lobos mounted a drive that started at their own 32-yard line but were stalled at the Nacogdoches 49-yard line as quarterback Jeb Blount punted on fourth and 19 to go for a first down. However, the Dragons fumbled the punt and the Lobos recovered at the Nacogdoches nine yard line.

Three plays later, halfback Calvin Portley rammed over from the two-yard line for the touchdown. The extra point kick by Blount was true and Longview knotted the game at 7-7 with 5:38 left to play in the first quarter.

Another fumble set up the Dragons turn. On first and 10 from their own 44-yard line next score, but this time it was Longview's Calvin Portley was jarred loose from the pigskin and Nacogdoches defensive end Aubrey Dempsey pounced on it at the Dragon 49-yard line.

Colston scored again, this time on a two yard plunge. The PAT kick by Brown was good and Nacogdoches jumped out to a 14-7 lead with just 18 seconds left to play in the first period.

The big play in the scoring drive was a 37 yard scamper by quarterback Brown as he elected to keep the ball on the option play.

Another Lobo fumble set up the next Dragon score as tailback Bobby Hunter recovered at the Longview 17-yard line.

Six plays later, Colston scored again as he ran three yards for the touchdown. Brown's kick for the extra point was again good and Nacogdoches owned a 21-7 lead with 5:42 left in the second period.

Not to be denied the Lobos showed great poise as they took the ensuing kickoff and marched 69 yards in six plays to get back into the game.

The Lobos had driven all the way to the Dragon 49-yard line from their now 31-yard line and facing second and six quarterback Jeb Blount ht Aaron Davis with a beautiful 35-yard bomb for the touchdown. Blount tried to run for the extra point and was stopped short of the goal and the Lobos had cut the Dragon lead to 21-13 with 2:21 remaining in the first half of play.

Nacogdoches' final touchdown came in the third quarter as Brown score on a quarterback sneak. Brown also kicked the PAT and Nacogdoches led 28-13 with 4:26 left in the third quarter.

The remainder of the game was all defensive as neither team could mount a scoring threat and Nacogdoches held on to win the game 28-13.
