LOBOS RETURN, BEAT WOODLAWN, 44-15
LONGVIEW - Highly aroused Longview High found an offensive explosion to go with its murderous defense here Friday night and unbelievably buried Shreveport Woodlawn Knights, 44 to 15, in the thunder of Lobo Stadium.

Most football coaches can find something to complain about in even the most lopsided of victories. Longview's Coach Clint Humphreys may be one of them, but it will take a lot of searching to find much wrong in the Lobos' performance against the Knights.

Friday night's win was the first for the Lobos and it was the third straight defeat for Woodlawn. It was the first time ever for the Knights to play a Texas football team.

Longview is now 1-1-1 for the season and will open District 14-AAAA action on Friday night, Oct. 1 at Marshall in a 7:30 p.m. contest at Maverick Stadium.

Longview's quarterback Jeb Blount and Woodlawn's ace field general Paul Kennington had a great night in the passing department. Woodlawn's longest gain on the ground was a run for seven yards by the halfback Terry Robinson.

Kennington, who is only a junior, completed 13 of 32 for 199 yards. Blount completed 4 of 8 passes for 114 yards.

Longview's first touchdown of the night came on an eight yard run by tailback Chuck Boyd in the first quarter on a pitch out from Blount around left end with 7:34 on the clock. Mike Mock kicked the extra point, 7-0.

Mock kicked off and Fredrick Youngblood fumbled the ball and Aaron Davis recovered for the Lobos at the Woodlawn 24. Six plays later Mock kicked a 25-yard field goal to give the Lobos a 10-0 lead with 4:57 left in the first quarter.

Quarterback Kennington found end Renard Johnson open for a 10-yard touchdown pass with 1:49 remaining in the first quarter. Mike Brown's extra point kick was good and the Knights had cut Longview's lead to 10 to 7.

Halfback Bobby Hunter turned on the speed with 4:43 left in the second quarter to score for Longview from 28 yards out. Mock's extra point kick was good, 17 to 7.

Halfback Hunter took a pitch out from Blount and sailed 43 yards for another Longview touchdown with 11:05 remaining in the third quarter. Mock's extra point kicks as blocked by the Knights. The Lobos had taken the opening kickoff and started the drive at the Lobo 45. On the first play, Hunter went 12 yards and then on the second play from the 43, the speedster turned on the jet fuel to the goal line.

Knights' field general Kennington hit end Ricky Wyatt on an 8-yard touchdown pass with 9:03 left in the third quarter to cut the lead again. Kennington came back and found Mike Koob in the end zone for the two point conversion, 23 to 15.

With 3:24 left in the third chapter, Kennington's pass was intercepted by Mike Mock at the Lobo 45 yard line. Bobby Hunter was showed by a host of Knights back to the Lobo 40. On the second try fullback David Hiett went to the Lobo 44. Then Blount found Charles Fagans open and sailed the ball into his arms. The pass-run play covered 56 yards and a touchdown with 2:02 left in the third period. Mock's kick was good and the Lobos led 30 to 15.

Hunter scored again for the Lobos on a nine-yard run with 10:22 remaining in the fourth period. Mock's kick was good, 37 to 15. The touchdown was set up when Aaron Davis recovered a punt fumble of Fredrick Youngblood at the nine yard of Woodlawn. On the first play, Hunter scored.

Calvin Portley scored for the Lobos when he went over from two yards out over left guard with 5:49 left in the game. Mock's kick was good, 44 to 15.
