STALLIONS PUT BITE ON LOBOS
LONGVIEW - There's no such thing as enough offense, if you don't get the points, and that was the trouble Longview's Lobos had Friday in Lobo Stadium.

Coach Clint Humphrey's Lobos piled up 269 yards passing and 63 yards in the rushing department for a net of 332 yards. However, North Mesquite had 280 yards rushing and 121 in the air for 401 yards.

Longview gained enough yards to win most games. But here Friday night, the Stallions of North Mesquite came through with a 36 to 23 victory.

The Lobos lost on the scoreboard but they made a 1,000% improvement over their game a week ago with Carthage's Bulldogs.

Quarterback Jeb Blount received the protection from his lineman that was missing the scoreless contest with Carthage.

Blount, 6'3, 185-pound senior, completed 15 of 21 passes for 269 yards. Blount hit Walter Sharpe on a 33-yard touchdown bomb and also Charles Fagan for a 77-yard touchdown.

Split end Charles Fagan, 5'11, 170-pound senior, caught three passes for 100 yards to lead the Lobos in the air department. End Walter Sharpe, 5'11, 180-pound senior, was ruined up with 93 yards on six tries.

Tight end Aaron Davis, 5'11, 180-pound senior, made several outstanding catches. He was the third leading catcher with 65 yards on five tries. Tailback Chuck Boyd caught one pass for 11 yards.

Quarterback John Clark of North Mesquite had himself a great game against the Lobos. Clark in the season opener did not complete one pass against South Grand Prairie. However, his team defeated SGP, 18-0. John completed nine of 13 pass against the Lobos for 121 yards. He passes to end Jimmy Owens for a 20-yard touchdown with 5:20 remaining in the game.

North Mesquite's first three point of the contest came on a field goal by Mike Barnes with 5:42 left in the first quarter. Barnes guided the ball 35 yards through the uprights. The field goal try was set up when defensive back Mike Barnes intercepted by a quarterback Blount pass at Longview 45 and return the ball to the Lobo 39. Nine plays later from the 19, the Stallions went for the field goal.

Following North Mesquite's field goal the Lobos took the kickoff and set up business on the Lobo 28 yard line. A total of 12 plays later the Lobos voted to go for a field goal. So, Mike Mock did the honor. His kick sailed 30 yards and the game was tied at 3-all with 11:55 remaining in the second quarter. Big drives in the march were by Blount on a 15yard run around the right side of the line. Blount's 11-yard pass to Chuck Boyd and to Walter Sharp.

Mock kicked off to the Stallions and they went to work at the North Mesquite 30 yard line. On the third play quarterback Clark hit tailback Scotty Yarbrough on a screen pass and the little sprinter went all the way. However, the touchdown was called back because of a Stallion penalty. At the 36 the Stallions started moving the ball again. Eight big plays later quarterback Clark on a keeper went into the end zone over left tackle for the touchdown with 6:47 remaining int he second quarter. Mike Barnes' kick for the extra point failed, 9 to 3.

Nine plays later as the gun sounded for halftime, Mike Barnes booted a 17-yard field goal to give the Stallions a 12-10 halftime lead. North Mesquite's fast offensive machine was just a little too much for the Lobos on the drive.

Tailback Scotty Yarbrough broke away from the Lobo defense in the third quarter and sprinted 44 yards for a touchdown with 7:19 remaining on the clock. Barnes added the extra point, 19-10. It took the Stallions six plays and three first downs to go 70 yards in two minutes and 25 seconds.

Fagan caught the ball and was hit and the pigskin dropped from his arms and was recovered by a host of North Mesquite plays at the Lobo 40-yard line. The pass gain was good for 12 yards before the fumble.

North Mesquite took over at the 40 of Longview and moved down the field like a pro club. On the fourth play quarterback Clark ht end Jim Owens on a 20-yard touchdown mom with 5:20 left in the game. Barnes added the extra point to make it 32 to 17.
