LONGVIEW, CARTHAGE PLAY TO A TIE
CARTHAGE - A case of first game jitters plagued Carthage and Longview here Friday night in Martin Stadium before a crowd of 4,000 on a hot September evening.

The two teams ended the contest in a scoreless tie, 0 to 0. This was the first time for these two clubs to play to a tie. The Lobos defeated Carthage in Lobo Stadium, 22 to 0, in 1970. In 1965, the Lobos blanked the Bulldogs, 7-0, and in 1964 Longview edged Carthage 21 to 14.

During the first half of action, the Bulldogs of Coach Bill Brasher had six first downs and 94 yards rushing. Longview had only three first downs and 40 yards rushing. It was by far a great defensive battle.

Fullback Kenneth Smith, 180-pounds, carried the ball seven times for 4 yards and right halfback S.T. Burns had 22 yards on five tries.

Fullback Larry Wilkins carried for 35 yards on eight tries in the first half.

For the contest, Longview had eight first downs and 105 net yards rushing. The Lobos compiled only 11 yards in the air. Longview attempted six passes, completed three and had two intercepted.

Carthage had a total of 14 first downs and 222 yards net rushing. The Bulldogs complied 11 yards in the air for a grand total of 233 yards. Longview had a grand total of 116 yards.

Early in the second quarter defensive safety Jerry Dancer intercepted a pass from quarterback Barry Samford to give the Lobos added fire with 11:56 reading on the clock. Dancer caught the ball at the Carthage 49 and returned the ball to the Carthage 23.

Fullback Larry Wilkens carried to the 20 on the first play over left tackle. On the next play Carthage was given a five yard penalty and moved the ball to the 15-yard line. Wilkens again took the handoff quarterback Jeb Blount and carried to the 12. This was good enough for a first down.

At the 12-yard line, quarterback Blount went to the air and his pass was picked off by Winfield Porter at the five yard line and he worked his way back to the 13 before he was stopped by a group of Lobos. This stopped a Longview drive and took a lot of first out of the entire Longview squad.

The third quarter started off as if the Bulldogs were going places. Mike Mock kicked off to the Bulldogs and Jerry Soape took the pigskin on the eight and returned to the 30 yard line.

Fullback Kenneth Smith carried tot eh 33. Quarterback Samford pushed his way tot he 37 and halfback Brad Blair carried to the 43 for a first down. From the 43 of Carthage, S.T. Burns went to the 50-yard line. Blair on the next play fumbled the ball and was recovered by rite defensive tackle Johnny Morrow at the 45-yard line of Longview. This stopped a Carthage drive.

With 9:45 left in the third quarter the Lobos took over. Quarterback Blount was caught for a minus nine yards. However, fullback Wilkens made it up on the next trip to the water pump as he pushed his way to the 40-yard line of Carthage for a gainer of 24 yards.

Five plays later, from the 28-yard line of Carthage, Blount went to the air again. This time his ball was intercepted by halfback Brad Blair at the 10-yard line and the ace junior athlete returned the ball tot eh 22-yard line. This again stopped a Lobo drive.

Carthage took over at the 22-yard line and moved down the field. Quarterback Samford hit end Gean Giles on an 11 yard bomb over center to the Longview 44-yard line. Three plays later, fullback Kenneth Smith fumbled and recovered the ball at the 49-yard line of Longview for a minus six yards. Blair came back and moved the ball tot eh 37 for a gain of 12 yards. On fourth down from the 37, Blair punted the ball down field and the ball rolled out of bounds at the Lobo 20-yard line.

Longview at the 20 started moving the ball. On the seventh play of the drive, quarterback Blount fumbled the ball and tailback Chuck Boyd recovered the ball at the Longview 32-yard stripe.

From the 32, at the start of the fourth quarter, Longview was hit hard and fast by an outstanding defensive team of Carthage. The Lobos were stopped at the 28-yard line of Carthage and Mike Mock was given orders to try a field goal. However, the Lobos took too much time and was given a five yard penalty. So with fourth down and Longview needing 17 for a first down, the Lobos voted to allow Blount to punt from his own 45-yard line. Blount was hit by a couple of Bulldogs and Carthage was given 15 yards. So the officials finally put the ball down at the Carthage 23-yard line. Wilkens carried on the final play to the 21 and the ball went over to Carthage at the 21-yard line.

Rodney Weaver of Carthage tried a 43-yard field goal with 14 seconds remaining and it fell short of the crossbars.

Standouts on defense were linebacker Donald Bonner, left end Keith Judy, right end Mark McDaniel and safety Jerry Dancer.

The Lobos are a young ball club and with a little more time of training could be a strong club. Several of the key starters for Longview were missing because of injuries.

Carthage, who ran from the Texas Wishbone T, did an excellent job. coach Darrel Royal of Texas would be proud of the way the Bulldogs ran the plays. Quarterback Samford, left halfback Brad Blair, fullback Kenneth Smith and halfback S.T. Burns turned in great jobs.
