TEXARKANA FALLS TO LOBOS
TEXARKANA - Highjacking airlines to Cuba is a popular sport in the game of international air travel. the Longview Lobos, in football, did some highjacking themselves here Friday night in Grim Stadium. The Lobos upset 10th ranked Texarkana, 12 to 7, here during their annual homecoming game.

It was the first loss of the season for Texarkana and it stopped a 17-game regular season winning streak for the Tigers. The Tigers will meet Palestine next Friday night for the District 14-AAAA championship.

If they give Oscars for high school football, Bill Gibson surely would win one for best supporting player.

Gibson, a 180-pound senior, recovered a key Lobo fumble during a drive in the second quarter that kept the Longview field goal drive alive on the Texarkana 48 yard line when tailback David Hiett fumbled the ball on a sweep play. But hardly anyone knows. Anyone, that is except the coaches and the players themselves, realize what a key play it was.

Matt Dove, a linebacker, intercepted a Texarkana pas from quarterback Tommy Ables in the early seconds of the fourth quarter to stop a Tiger drive at the Lobo 48-yard line. Dove returned the ball back to the Tiger 47.

Quarterback Ronnie Davis took over at the Tiger 47 and marched the Lobos down field. From the 2-yard line tailback James Lomax scored for Longview with 8:55 left in the game. Jeb Blount added the extra point to give the Lobos a 9 to 7 lead. Don Peek's run for the two pointer failed. Hiett, Rodney Cox and Davis were the big guns in the drive.

Following Longview's touchdown Blount kicked off to the Tigers and Prentice Brown fumbled the ball but quickly recovered. Four plays later defensive star Keith Judy rushed quarterback Ables and the Tiger quarterback fumbled the ball and Jackson recovered at the Tiger 3 yard line with seven minutes left in the contest.

Seven plays later Lomax went over from the one for a Longview touchdown. However, the Lobos were charged with a 5 yard penalty and the ball was moved back to the 6 and the touchdown did not count. Two plays later, from the 6 on fourth down, Jeb Blount kicked a 23-yard field goal to give the Lobos a 12-7 victory.

A key play in the drive was a 12 yard pass to tailback Tommy McDermott from quarterback Davis at the 5 yard line of Texarkana.

Longview started a new game plan here Friday night. The Lobos won the toss of the coin but they elected to kickoff to the Tigers. Texarkana moved to the Longview 12 yard line. However, halfback Daniel Lukas fumbled the ball and recovered it back at the 17. The Longview defensive unit held the Tigers on fourth down at the 17 and Longview took over with 7:45 left in the first quarter.

On the first play from the 17, the Lobos were given a 5 yard penalty. David Hiett carried the ball over left tackle to the 18 for a gain of 6. Four plays later from the 19. The ball was fumbled by halfback Forte at the Lobo 33 and it was recovered by Aaron Davis of Longview with 5:14 left in the first quarter.

From the Texarkana 33, Hiett took a handoff from quarterback Davis and he fumbled it and it was recovered by Roy Hendrix for the Tigers at the 32 of Texarkana.

Quarterback Ables moved his Tigers 68 yards in 16 plays - plus a 1 yard penalty against the Lobos - and the Tigers scored. Quarterback Able went into the end zone over left guard from the one yard line with 11:57 left in the second quarter. James DeLoach kicked the extra point, 7-0. Longview put three points on the scoreboard with 3:52 left before halftime on a 23-yard field goal by Jeb Blount.

Defensive stars for the Lobos were Keith Judy, Marcellas Jackson, Bill Williams, Matt Dove, Jimmy Draper, Kent Wilson and Larry Smith.

The Longview Lobos will close out the 1970 season playing host to Lufkin on Friday night, Nov. 13.

The Lobos were celebrating in the dressing room following the victory. Many hundred fans poured through the dressing room to show their appreciation. This was the first victory over Texarkana since 1967, when Longview defeated the Tigers 42-0 in Grim Stadium.
