TYLER LEE LICKS LOBOS
TYLER - Like a giant vacuum cleaner, Tyler Lee sucked up every opportunity offered in the first half, made more key breaks in the final half and fought off Longview for a wild 14 to 7 victory to win their second District 14-AAAA contest of the '70 season here in Rose Stadium Friday night before a crowd of 7,000 on a cool October evening.

Duffy Daugherty once disagreed with those who call football a contact sport. "Dancing is a contact sport," said the Michigan State coach. "Football is a collision sport."

The Rebels of Coach Don Barton would have said it as cleverly but the Lee ball club proved Mr. Daugherty's point. Lee came to play and they played every down as if they were going for the district championship.

When the gun sounded to end the contest, Coach Barton dashed across the playing field to shake Longview's Tommy Hudspeth's hand. It was the second straight year for the former Longview athlete to beat the Lobos. Last year, in the second game of the season, the Lee Rebels beat Longview 20-0.

Texarkana's 14-6 win over Lufkin at Texarkana Friday night nearly gave the District 14-AAAA crown to the Tiger. Palestine defeated Marshall and John Tyler was open.

The Lobos will be at Texarkana next Friday night for another district contest. Texarkana is now 4-0-0 in loop play and 8-0-0 for the season. Longview is 5-2-0 and 2-2-0 in conference play. The Lobos now can only play for a runner-up position.

Friday night's contest was the kind that everything the Lobos did went wrong. EVerything Lee did was just correct. Longview tried. They did not give up and the Lobos were not out coached. It was the costly errors by the Lobos themselves.

A young man from the Tyler Lee B-team whose name and number wasn't even in the program picked off three of Longview's passes. He is Brad Harvey. This kid should have been awarded the game ball and given a holiday next week. He helped the Rebels win that game in more ways than one.

Two week sago the Lobos were beaten by Palestine, 6-0. The mistakes in the game cost the Lobos a victory.

Longview's offensive machine was something to be desired Friday night.

Tyler Lee marched 91 yards (35 yards with the aid of officials on penalties against the Lobos) for their first touchdown of the night. Quarterback passes to halfback Robbie Roberts that covered three yards for the touchdown with 1:48 left in the first quarter. Shuttlesworth kicked the extra point and the Rebels had a 7-0 lead.

With 28 seconds left in the second quarter, the Rebels were at Longview's 30-yard line. On fourth down and eight, Shuttlesworth punted the ball Don Peek of Longview fumbled the ball and it was recovered by Tom Paul at the Longview 38 yard line.

From the 38 yard line, with 20 seconds left before halftime, Shuttlesworth went to the air by several Longview defensive players. Well, the ball went into the arms of Mike Lambert and he rushed across the goal line for an easy Tyler Lee touchdown with 12 seconds left in the quarter. Shuttlesworth kicked the extra point, 14-0.

With 2:50 left in the contest, Longview's quarterback Jeb Blount passed to end Tom Brown for the lone Lobo touchdown that covered 17 yards. Blount added the extra point with his educated toe, 14-7.

Roy Smith intercepted a pass from quarterback Ronnie Davis with 1:02 left in the first quarter at the Lee 28 yard line to stop a drive.

Mr. Harvey intercepted a Davis pass at the Lee 15 yard line in the early minutes of the second quarter to stop another drive.

Harvey came through with his second interception with 6:50 left in the game when he caught a pass thrown by fullback Rodney Cox to stop a Longview drive at the nine yard line of Tyler. Harvey caught the ball in the end zone.

Harvey's final interception came with 27 seconds left in the game when he picked off a Blount pass at the Lee 32 yard line.
