LONGVIEW BLASTS JOHN TYLER
LONGVIEW - It was over and done, finally...mercifully. John Tyler was a badly beaten football team. John Tyler was also crippled, almost beheaded by savage Longview, 27 to 8, before a crowd of 6,000 onlookers in Lobo Stadium Friday night.

An angry Longview defense held the Lions of Tyler to only one first down in the first half, 10 yards rushing and 14 passing. However, the Lobo offensive machine scored 10 points in the first half, compiled 117 on the ground and 52 in the air.

The victory was number five straight this season and 10th straight dating back to mid-season of 1969. The Lobos are now 2-0 in District 14-AAAA play and the Lions went home with an 0-2 district mark.

John Tyler joined another District 14-AAA club that was truly out classed here Friday. Last Friday night, the Lobos upended Marshall 27 to 0 in Lobo Stadium. However, it must be said that the Lions put on a much greater show than the Mavericks.

Sophomore tailback Chuck Boyd, 165, was the leading ground gainer for the Lobos with 19 carries for 65 yards. During the first half the jittery halfback carried eight times for 43 yards. Boyd scissored through the Lion line many, many times for great gainers. He is one of the quickest backs on the Lobo team.

Longview's defense, as alert and staunch as ever, truly carried the Lobos to victory. It was the offense that allowed John Tyler to score their only touchdown of the night.

The first big break of the night for John Tyler was not winning the toss of the coin. They were given the job of kicking off to the Lobos. Co-captains fullback Rodney Cox and monster man Joseph Rattler won the toss of the coin for the Lobos.

Longview took the opening kickoff at the 36 yard line and four plays later Bill Gibson punted the ball down field. It was killed at the Lion 28 yard line.

John Tyler was not able to move the ball but for only four yards and on fourth down Mike Landrum punted the ball down the field to the Lobo 38 yard line. Timmy McDermott took the ball at the 25 and returned to the 38.

Quarerback Ronnie Davis called his bunch of offensive boys together and they marched down the field. The first giant gainer was 14 yards by tailback Chuck Boyd. Boyd carried again at the John Tyler 36 to the 31. Then on second down quarterback Davis hit wingback Timmy McDermott with a 27 yard bomb at the four yard line.

At the four the Lions were charged with a two-yard penalty. From the two on second down tailback James Lomax wen hover right tackle for the touchdown with 4:41 left in the first quarter. Jeb Blount's kick was good and the Lobos had a 7-0 lead. The drive covered 62 yards in nine plays.

Blount kicked off to the Lions and Phillip Cole took the ball at the 11 and returned to the 32. On the first play quarterback Rickey Rayford fumbled the ball and the Lobos recovered the ball at the John Tyler 33.

John Tyler's defense came alive and did a mighty good job of holding the Lobos. Longview turned the ball over to the Lions at the 27 when quarterback Davis went to the air three straight times and failed to hit his receivers.

John Tyler took over on the 27 and moved the ball to the 44 on the fifth play in the drive. However, on the sixth play quarterback Rayford was rushed by defensive tackle Bill Williams and the Lion quarterback fumbled the ball. Keith Judy was credited with the recovery.

Longview took over and moved down the field on fine running plays by Boyd, fullback Rodney Cox and tailback McDermott. However, on a fourth and four at the 10, Davis passed to end Bill Gibson in the end zone. He caught the ball. However, he dropped the old pigskin and John Tyler took over at their 10 yard line.

John Tyler ran three plays and made seven yards. On fourth down at the 17 Landrum punted the ball to the Lobo 42 yard line.

Tailback Lomax started the drive to the 44 and then McDermott turned on his speed to the 33 for a gain of 23 yards. Seven plays later the Lobos war at ht e18 and it was third and 16. Davis' pass failed and Blount was sent into the game for a field goal try. Blount's 34 yard field goal was good and the Lobos had a 10-0 lead with 2:16 left in the second quarter. The Lobos had made it to the John Tyler 12 on a fine left end run by McDermott. But on the next play the Lion defense rushed Davis for minus six yards back to the 18.

Longview's linebacker Matt Dove recovered a Lion fumble at the 34 yard line on the first play after Blount had kicked off to the Lions.

At the 34 of John Tyler, the Lobos ran one play and was charged with a 15 yard penalty. So the ball was moved back to the 44 yard line. Five plays later Jeb Blount punted the ball down field to the 23.

John Tyler took over at their own 23 and on second down quarterback Rayford went to the air at the 23 and his pass was intercepted by all-state halfback Kent Wilson a the Lobo 48 and he returned the ball to the John Tyler for a return of 18 yards.

Longview ran three plays and on fourth down Blount punted from the 33 and the ball rolled into the end zone. With 18 seconds on the clock, John Tyler took over.

The third quarter looked more like the Lobos. Blount kicked off and the Lions took over at the 25. On fourth down at the 27 Landrum once again punted. Judy rushed the punter and blocked the ball for a recovery.

Fullback Cox plowed over right side to the four. Then tailback Lomax scored from the four over right tackle with 9:52 left in the third quarter. Blount's kick failed. However, Longview had a 16-0 lead.

Blount kicked off and the Lions took over at the 26. On third down Rayford's pass was intercepted by linebacker Jimmy Draper at the 32 yard line and he returned the ball at the eight.

Tailback David Hiett carried to the five and then Hiett carried the ball into the end zone from five yards out for the touchdown with 8:28 on the clock in the this quarter. Blount's kick was good and the Lobos had a 23-0 lead.

Blount once again kicked off and the Lions took over at at the 20.

On fourth down Landrum punted and the ball was returned to the Lobo 40 yard line.

Coach Tommy Hudspeth sent in his reserves. They moved the ball down the field. Fullback Larry Smith carried for 19, 2 and 17 yards to the five yard line. On first down at the five, the Lobos were given a five yard penalty. Tailback Joseph Rattler carried twice for only four yards to the six. Then on third down, Aaron Davis carried to the three. However, John Tyler was given a 1 1/2 yard penalty to the 1 1/2 yard line. It was fourth down and Lomax was stopped at the half yard line. So, John Tyler took over with 3:34 left in the third quarter.

Officially at the one, quarterback Rayford was rushed in the end zone by a host of defensive Lobos for a 2-point safety. With 3:31 on the clock, Longview had a 25-0 lead.

In the fourth quarter from 47 yard line on fourth down Landrum punted for John Tyler. Timmy McDermott allowed the ball to roll to the six yard line of Longview. On the first play quarterback Jeb Blount fumbled the ball and Lonnie Uzzell recovered the ball for a John Tyler touchdown with 8:11 on the clock in the fourth quarter. Quarterback Rayford ran the ball over for the two point extra point, 25-8.

The Lobos took the kickoff from Landrum at the five and returned the ball by Peek to the 23. Longview marched down the field with authority. At the John Tyler 37 yard line, the Lions were given a 15 yard penalty that moved the ball to the 23. Blount hit end Tom Brown on a 19 yard pass to the four. Boyd carried twice and his last try found the ball at the one. Then on fourth down Davis Hiett was stopped at the one yard line for no gain.

With 56 seconds left in the game, John Tyler took over. On third down Rayford was caught in the end zone by linebacker Draper for a 2-point safety with 46 seconds remaining on the clock. Longview had a 27-8 victory.
