LOBOS SLAY MARSHALL, 27-0
LONGVIEW - Say this for Marshall...it tried. It fired all of its shelled. Gunpower just ran out.

Longview simply proved too much for the Maverick football team here Friday night in Lobo Stadium in the District 14-AAAA opener for both ball club.

Just for the record, the Lobos only posted a 27 to 0 victory. It was the fourth win of the 1970 season for Coach Tommy Hudspeth's Lobos and it was also their ninth straight - dating back to mid-season of 1969.

Longview's No. 1 offensive unit held the Mavericks to zero first downs in the firs half and only 13 yards rushing. Longview compiled 21 points on the scoreboard, 11 first downs, 152 yards rushing and 59 yards in the air. The Mavericks of coach Ralph Brooks were really outclassed here by the Lobo football team.

The Marshall ball club never made it to midfield in the first half. The closest they came was tot he 29 yard line in the second quarter. Marshall only ran 17 offensive plays during the first half. The largest gainer was a nine yard run by tailback Graylon Smith.

Fullback Rodney Cox in the first half led the rushers with 14 carries for 73 yards. Tailback James Lomax carried 12 times for 53 yards. Quarterback Ronnie Davis completed four of five passes for 59 yards.

Marshall went home with a 2-2-0 season record. The Lobos are now 4-0-0 for the season and will play John Tyler's Lions here on Friday night, Oct. 9 in a 7:30 p.m. game.

The Lobo defensive line must again be given a big round of thanks for a fine job. Big names in this group would have to be Keith Judy, bill Williams, Kent Wilson, Don Peek, Matt Dove, Jimmy Draper and others.

The offensive line of Kenneth Howell, Dana Walters, Ted Martin, Mike Craig, Mancil Hervey, Gerald Thornton, Bill Gibson and Randy Peters turned in a great job.

Again it was truly a team victory. Sure there were some individual stars. But it took teamwork to beat the Mavericks.

Co-captains Don Peek and Larry Smith won the toss and elected to receive for the Lobos. The Longview club under the direction of quarterback Ronnie Davis, took over on the 20 yard line. Davis marched the Lobos to the Marshall 34 yard line in nine plays. However, on the next play, the Lobos were issued a 15 yard penalty and this stopped the drive. On fourth down from the Marshall 49, punter Bill Gibson punted the ball down field.

Marshall took over on their own 10 yard line. On fourth down from the 19, Gale Johnson punted and the Lobos took over on the Lobo 44 yard line.

David and the Lobos marched 56 yards in 10 plays to acre. Davis went over from the one yard line over right guard for the touchdown with 21 seconds left in the first quarter. Jeb Blount kicked the extra point and the Lobos led, 7-0.

Quarterback Davis in the drive hit split end Bill Gibson on a 13 yard pass and on a 26 harder to help. He also had ground work by Timmy McDermott, fullback Rodney Cox and tailback Joseph Rattler.

Longview's second touchdown drive started on the Marshall 47. It took only 7 plays to go the 47 yards and quarterback Davis went into the end zone from 11 yards out for the touchdown with 7:47 on the clock in the second quarter. Davis' run was set up on a broken play. He went back to pass and was rushed. He broke away from several would-be tacklers and sailed through the Mavericks like water dropping from the sky. Blount again kicked the extra appoint and the Lobos had a 14-0 lead. Fullback Cox had carries of 3, 11, 15 and 3 yards in the drive.

Quarterback Rick Smart of Marshall fumbled the ball and Larry Smith recovered for Longview at the Marshall 27 yard line with 6:55 left before halftime.

The Lobos went the 27 yards in six plays. Tailback James Lomax plowed over from the three for the touchdown with 4:55 left on the clock before halftime. Blount's kick was good for a 21 to 0 Lobo lead.

With 4:41 left in the second quarter tailback Graylon Smith's pass was intercepted by defensive halfback Kent Wilson at the 49 of Marshall. Coach Tommy Hudspeth sent in several reserves and the Lobos, on fourth down, were forced to punt.

Marshall came back in the third quarter and looked a little improved. They took the opening kickoff and started their drive on their own 37 yard line. However, the Lobo defense held the Mavericks on the one yard line on fourth down. This was team work by a host of Lobos.

The third quarter was given over to the game officials. This group of flag throwers must be given the weekly medal for number of flags. Even the Lobo fans got unhappy with the officiating in the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the Lobos went to work despite the officials. Defensive halfback Joseph Rattler intercepted a pass from Marshall's tailback at the 37 yard line. However the Lobos were given a 15-yard penalty. Before you could look up, the officials marched off 15 more yards agains the Lobos. When they finally put the ball down, it was at the Lobo 41 yard line. Longview had to go to the Marshall 34 for a first down.

Fire-plug-shaped fullback Larry Smith carried to the 46 of the Lobos and tailback Chuck Boyd sprinted to the 39 of Marshall. However, the officials threw a flag against Marshall and the ball was placed at the Maverick 26. Three plays later quarterback Jeb Blount was caught for a minus six yards. Again, the flag went down. This time the ball was moved to the Marshall 13 yard line. Somewhere and somehow the Lobos made 20 yards. Really don't know how. From the 13, Aaron Davis carried to the 10 and fullback Larry Smith carried the ball to the one yard line. From the one tailback Joseph Rattler went over right tackle in tot he end zone for the touchdown with 7:05 left in the fourth quarter. Blount's kick failed.

Fullback Cox carried the ball 14 times for 69 yards; tailback Lomax went 55 yards on 15 tries and Larry Smith carried seven times for 81 yards. Smith is one of the most powerful runners. He is hard to bring down.

Quarterback Davis completed five of eight for 76 yards and Blount completed two of four for 21 yards.

Punter Bill Gibson had a great night as he had a 42.0 average in punting on four tries. He also caught four passes for 59 yards. Ken Howell caught one for 17; Randy Peters landed on for 15 and Chuck Boyd caught one for six yards.
