LONGVIEW'S LOBOS BOMBARD KILGORE'S BULLDOGS
LONGVIEW - Whoever named Longview's football team Lobos in days of long ago may have been anticipating Friday night, the school's finest pigskin hour.

Coach Tommy Hudspeth's athletes had the characteristics of the Lobo - fiery eyed, agile, Wild with hunger and their defensive fangs sank in again and again to deal Kilgore High's Bulldogs a 28-0 defeat in a non-conference game at Lobo Stadium before a very small crowd on a rainy September night.

A light rain started falling on Lobo Stadium about 7:15 p.m. and at kickoff time the rain really did fall. However most of the loyal Lobo and Kilgore fans stayed in the stadium until halftime. But when the third quarter started, the stadium only had a few hundred fans remaining to see the Lobos score two more touchdowns against the Bulldogs of Coach John Blocker.

The Lobos made it three straight and pushed their record to eight straight wins - dating back to the mid season of 1969 when Longview defeated Marshall's Mavericks at Marshall. The Lobos will open district 14-AAAA play here Friday night, Oct. 7, playing Coach Ralph Brook's Mavericks of Marshall.

The individual brilliance of bash Ronnie Davis, senior quarterback, led the Lobos to victory. Davis was mighty sharp in play calling. The rain and wind didn't stop his offensive machine from moving.

Kilgore's Bulldogs came to play and gave an excellent account of themselves. However, the Bulldogs here Friday night were just outclassed.

Kilgore quarterback Mack Spurlock turned in a great job. The Lobo defense was just too sharp. However, he managed to get off several good runs against the Lobos.

Longview took the opening kickoff on the 29 yard line of Longview. In 15 plays and 71 yards, the Lobos scored their first of four touchdowns of the night. Tailback James Lomax carried the ball into the end zone from two yards out over right guard. in the drive, Longview carried for 40 yards. Lomax had big gainers of 7, 9, 6 and 14 yards.

Quarterback Davis, at the Lobo 48 yard line, hit split end Bill Gibson n a 10 yard pass to the Kilgore 42 to help the drive for the touchdown. Jeb Blount kicked the extra point and the Lobos had a 7-0 lead with 1:34 left in the first quarter.

Kilgore tailback Leon Banda was going back to punt the ball from the Kilgore 19 when a great host of Lobos pushed forward and blocked the punt. The ball was recovered in the end zone by linebacker Matt Dove for a Lobo touchdown with 1:45 left in the second quarter. Blount's ice was good and the Lobos had a 14-0 lead. The punt was blocked by both Bill Williams and Matt Dove.

The third touchdown of the night when halfback Jackie Clayton fumbled the ball at the Kilgore 24 yard line with 8:48 left in the third quarter. Defensive halfbackKent Wilson recovered the ball for the Lobos.

Longview went 23 yards in five plays for the touchdown. Quarterback Davis went into the end zone from eight yards out around right end for the touchdown. Blount's extra point was good and the Lobos led 21-0, with 6:22 left in the third quarter.

On the first play of the drive from the 23, fullback Rodney Cox carried to the 17 and halfback Lomax pushed his way to the 13. Lomax carried again to the eight, then on the next play Davis went in for the six points.

Blount kicked off to the Bulldogs and Banda took the ball at the 13 and returned to the 26. On the second play from the 35, halfback Clayton fumbled the old wet pigskin and defensive safety Don Peek recovered for the Lobos at the Kilgore 35.

Six plays later, fullback Larry Smith scored from nine yards out over right tackle for the six points with 4:29 remaining in the third. Blount's kick again was good, 28-0.

Quarterback Jeb Blount entered the game on the last touchdown drive to guide the Lobos. Smith carried to the 26 on the first try. Then tailback Chuck Boyd, who is only a Sophomore, carried to the 23. Boyd again carried to the 16 and then to the nine for a first down at the one yard line.

During the first half of action, Longview had nine first downs and Kilgore only two. Longview compiled 138 yards rushing and Kilgore was held to 30.

Longview's offensive line must be given a big pat on the back for a great job. They made the holes for the runners Friday night. Boys like Dana Walters, Ted Martin, Mike Craig and Maniel Hervey. These boys paid the price for the win.

Standouts on defense were Joseph Battler, Keith Judy, Marcilas Jackson, Larry Smith, Bill Williams, Aaron Davis, Matt Dove, David Hiett, Billy Writt and Kent Wilson.

Many, many reserves got to see plenty of action for the Lobos. A big stand out in the backfield was tailback Chuck Boyd. This youngster is going to make a big name for himself before he graduates. He is only a Sophomore.

Fullback Rodney Cox saw more action in carrying the pigskin against the Bulldogs. Tailback Lomax showed his power time and again. He isn't afraid of being blocked or tackled.

The Lobos will start Monday afternoon making ready for Marshall. This will be the test of the 1970 District 14-AAAA campaign.
