LONGVIEW PUTS BITE ON CARTHAGE'S BULLDOGS
LONGVIEW - Longview's Lobos committed four deadly sins and lived to tell about it in a 22 to 0 conquest of Carthage at Lobo Stadium here Friday night before a crowd of less than 5,000 on a hot September night.

Four times the Lobos fumbled away the football with three such bobbles being recovered by the Bulldogs of Coach Bill Brasher. The three fumbles that Carthage recovered stopped sure fire scoring drives.

The Lobo defense was unquestionably the Lobos' strong point here Friday night. Notable among the names cropping up frequently were tackle Bill Wilhains, end Davis, linebacker Matt Dove and monster man Joseph Rattler.

The Longview offensive machine under the direction of quarterback Ronnie Davis never really got a big drive started. The fumbles killed the Lobos.

The big ground gainer for the Lobos was tailback James Lomax with 74 yards on 15 carries. The second best was fullback Rodney Cox with 33 seconds on 10 tries.

Coach Tommy Hudspeth used both of his quarterbacks, Davis and junior signal caller Jeb Blount.

Longview's first touchdown of the night came with 6:34 left int he first quarter when defensive monster man Joseph Rattler intercepted a pass from the throwing arm of Kirk Brewster. Rattler dashed 25 yards of the six points around right end. Jeb Blount's extra point kick was good and the Lobos led 7-0.

Carthage tried a 26-yard field goal with only seconds remaining in the first quarter. Rodney Weaver's kick fell short of the cross bars. That was about as close as Carthage came to scoring.

In the second quarter, the Lobos took over on their 36-yard line and marched for a touchdown. On the first play, quarterback Davis hit wingback Tim McDermott on a 22-yard pass to the 46 of Carthage. Four more running plays and a five yard penalty against Carthage, the Lobos went to the air again. This time Davis landed a 15 yarder into the arms of McDermott at the Carthage 25-yard line.

From the 25, tailback Lomax carried to the 24. However, Carthage was issued a 12 yard penalty to place the ball at the 11-yard line. Tailback Lomax took a handoff from Davis and sailed around the left side of the field to the goal line for the six points. With 2:5 on the clock in the second quarter, the Lobos had a 13-0 lead. Blount's extra point try failed.

In the third quarter, Carthage tailback Frank Langles was caught in the end one for a safety with 7:12 left in the third chapter. The Lobos led 15-0.

With 3:55 remaining in the third quarter, the Lobos took over on the Carthage 44-yard line. On the eighth play, quarterback David fumbled the ball at the Carthage 15-yard line and was recovered by Rodney Weaver. That stopped a sure touchdown drive.

Longview's blood end Aaron Davis recovered a quarterback Kirk Brewster fumble at the Carthage 11-yard line. In four plays, the Lobos scored. Fullback Rodney Cox plowed over from the one over right guard for the touchdown with 7:51 left int eh game. Blount's kick was good and the Lobos had a 22-0 victory.

The Lobos made only 128 yards rushing and 70 yards in the air for 198 yards. Carthage had a minus 35 yards rushing and 37 yards passing for a net two yards for the entire contest.

Longview completed on five of 13 passes.

Punter Bill Gibson must be given a pat-on-the-back for a great job. He punted seven times for an average of 40.7.
