LONGVIEW OVERWHELMS JOHN TYLER
LONGVIEW - The Longview Lobos met a proud but sorely under-manned John Tyler squad here Friday night and after four quarters of District 13-AAAA football left the Lions from Tyler a battered and bleeding mass of confusion, 34 to 0.

The score is surprising, you may say. But if you were among the 3,500 crowd on this cold winter night in Lobo Stadium you would have been surprised that the Longview margin wasn't greater.

Longview of Coach Tommy Hudspeth finished the 1969 season with a 7-3-0 record and a 5-3-0 district mark. The Lions went home with a 3-7-0 record and a 2-6-0 district standing.

The Lions were beaten on the scoreboard, on the ground, in the air and out tackled. It was just a slaughter by the Lobos. This was by far the weakest John Tyler team to face Longview in eight years.

The Lobos had 188 yards rushing in the first half and John Tyler had only 44. Longivew has 12 first downs and the Lions had just four in the first half. It was really all Longview. Even the halftime show was won by the No. 1 ranked Lobo band and the lovely Lobo Viewettes. It was a great night for Longview and fans.

The Lobo defense came to play and they gave the Lions a whipping they won't forget for a long time. Players like Corwyn Bush, Billy Medlin, Gary Hunter, Steve Graham, Bob Diehl, Steve Cole and others. It was a crew tight of blocking and tackling.

The only thing the Lions won here Friday night was the toss-of-the-coin in midfield prior to the game.

The second time the Lobos got the ball early in the first quarter they scored. The Longview team, under the barking of quarterback Ronnie Davis, went 62 yards in nine plays and three first downs for the touchdown. Davis on a keeper wen toff right tackle into the end zone for the touchdown with 6:19 left on the scoreboard. Jimmie Hill added the extra point and the Lobos led, 7-0. The big play was a pass from Davis to end Joe Jordan that covered 16 yards.

Linebacker Billy Medlin recovered quarterback Ricky Rayford's fumble at the Tyler three yard line to set up the next touchdown. On the second play, quarterback Davis went into the end zone from the three for the touchdown with four seconds let in the first quarter. Hill's kicks as good and the Lobos led 14-0.

Tailback Alton Coley carried over from the two yard line for the third touchdown of the night with 3:17 left in the second quarter. Hill's kick went to the right of the uprights and the Lobos had to settle for only the touchdown, 20-0. The touchdown drive started on the Lobo 40-yard line. Defensive safety Kent Wilson intercepted Rayford's pass to give the Lobos good field position. In 11 plays and 60 yards (make it 65, the Lobos got a give yard penalty), Longview scored the touchdown.

The big gainers were made by Coley and fullback Rodney Cox. Coley carried five times and made the following yards - 2, 19, 6, 3 and 2 yards. Cox, who is really a work horse, carried and made the following - 4, 8, 1, 1 and 10 yards.

Quarterback Davis and other members of the starting lineup left the game and in came the reserves with 3:08 left in the first half.

In the third quarter, quarterback Davis went to the air and sailed a pass into the arms of end Bill Gibson in the left side of the field and the talented receiver went into the end zone for the touchdown with 4:57 left in the third chapter. Hill's kick was good and the Lobos led, 27-0.

From then on the reserves played the contest for the Lobos.

Longview's final touchdown of the night came when quarterback Ronald Cibulka passed to end Joe Jordan in the right end zone for the touchdown with 41 seconds left in the game. Hill added the extra point, 34-0.

The leading rusher for the Lobos was tailback Coley with 109 yards on 20 carries. Fullback Cox was runner up with 61 yards on 14 tries. Fullback Jimmie Hill carried nine times for 36 yards.

Tyler's leading rusher was Smith Rogers for 41 yards on six carries.

Longview had 325 net yards rushing and Tyle chad 83 net yards. Longview had 81 yards in the air and the Lions 35.

The Lobos will report to the Lobo Fieldhouse Saturday morning to check in uniforms. Many of the Lobos will start basketball training on Monday afternoon.
