LOBOS RAMBLE PAST PEMBERTON, 42-12
MARSHALL - Just like that TV commercial says, Roland Whitehurst came back. Billy Price, Ray Wright, Ralph Blount, Dale Sisk, Larry Shanks, and other Lobos came back. Lobo blocking, tackling and poise came back. . .and Longview came back after three weeks of being defeated, and thrashed Marshall Pemberton's Panthers, 42-12, here Friday night at Maverick Stadium before a very small crowd of home town fans. Less than 1,000 Lobo fans made the trip here.

It was easy, this one, with Longview carrying out assignments most of the fall night like right out of a winning text book.

All players that made the trip here from Longivew saw action. It was the kind of game that gave the Lobos a chance to use a lot of junior boys that will be counted on in 1969.

The Lobos had a 35-0 half time lead and Longivew only scored on touchdown in the second half as Coach Tommy Hudspeth used his reserve quarterbacks and running backs. The quarterbacks that saw action were Roland Whitehurst, Mack Hill, Roland Crbulka, Mike Northcutt, and Blackshear Jameson.

Longview will play host to Lufkin in Lobo Stadium on Friday night, Nov 8 at 7:30 p.m. Lufkin defeated Marshall 38 to 22, Friday night at Lufkin.

The victory for Longview elevated their season record to 5-3-0 and a District 13-AAAA record to 4-2-0. Pemberton is still winless with a 0-7-0 mark (District 13-AAAA and for the season).

Lobo leader Tommy Hudspeth bouncing around sideline headquarters like a cheerleader - general, poured hustling troops into the arena in-waves. Most of them did well, several very well like Larry Shanks, Joe Day, Ray Wright, David Putman, Jimmy Griffin, Mike Adkisson, Ralph Blount and others.

The Lobos had 10 first downs in the first half and Pemberton only five. In the yards rushing, Longview had a net of 245 and Pemberton compiled only 60. Longview passed for 58 yards and Pemberton had zero.

Quarterback Whitehurst looked mighty shark in guiding the Lobos to victory. He attempted three passes and completed two of 47 yards. He passed to Alton Coley for the first Lobo touchdown of the night in the first quarter. He carried the ball only four times for a net of 50 yards.

The leading rusher was fullback Ray Wright on nine carries for 87 yards. Runner up was tailback Billy Price on eight tries for 57 yards.

The Panthers won the toss and elected to kickoff to the Lobos. Clinton Moorman kicked off and deep back Eddie Koon took the ball on the 15 and just had the pigskin in his hands when he was hit and fumbled and Pemberton recovered on the 27. This nearly shook the Lobos coaches off the sideline. The Lobos fumbled eight times and lost five during the contest. Last week, the Lobos fumbled seven times and lost four.

Pemberton took over on Longview's 27. The Panthers went to work and so did Longview's great defense.

The Lobo defense must be given a "big pat-on-the-back" for a great job. They held the Panthers on fourth down from the nine yard line.

The two teams exchanged punts a couple of time sand finally the Lobos took over on the 13 yard line of Longview.

In six plays, the Lobos scored their first touchdown of the night when quarterback Whitehurst passed to tailback Alton Coley in the right end zone from 10 yards out. With one minute and 54 seconds left, the Lobos had a 6-0 lead. Ralph Blount kicked the extra point, 7-0. The big gainer in the drive was 56 yard gallop by fullback Ray Wright through the middle of the line. He nearly broke away for the goal line but defensive halfback Curtis Jones caught him from the side and grounded the fancy stepping runner.

Longview's second touchdown drive started on the Lobo 39 after Moorman had punt the ball out of bounds at the 39.

In six plays, again Whitehurst on a keeper play sprinted around the right side of the field into the end zone for the touchdown from 18 yards away. Blount's kick again was good and the Lobos had a 14-0 lead.

Wingback Bobby Gilchrist was a key runner in the drive as he carried the ball from the Pemberton 37 to the 23 for 14 yards. However, prior to Gilchrist's run Billy Price had taken he ball from the Lobo 41 to the Marshall 37 for a gain of 22 yards. With 8:14 left in the second quarter, the Lobos had a 14-0 lead.

Pemberton's quarterback Jerrold Black on a third down and 17 needed for a first went to the air and defensive safety Mark Hill intercepted the pass at the Longview 34 to set up Longview's third touchdown of the night.

From the 34, quarterback Whitehurst passed to strong side end Jimmy Griffin to the 29 of Pemberton for a gain of 37 yards. Roland sailed the bomb into Griffin's arm and Jimmy broke off for the goal line. However, a couple of deep backs caught the talented athlete at the 29.

Fullback Wright on the next play carried to the 10 and then Billy Price worked his way at the left side of the field to the seven for a first down. Price then went off right tackle to the three and on the second play, Price went into the end zone for the touchdown with 4:47 left before the halftime show. Blount's kick was good, 21-0.

Blount kicked off and Curtis Jones took the ball at the 15 and was hit by a host of Lobos and the ball bounced from his arms and Eddie Koon recovered the ball for Longview at the 14. Three plays later, fullback Wright plowed over from one yard away into the end zone. Blount added the extra point, 28-0. With 3:37 left, the Lobos looked like the Lobos before the Texarkana game.

Again the Lobo touchdown machine started moving after taking a punt at the Lobo 49 yard line. Tailback Coley added 15 yards on a very good run up the middle to the 36. Quarterback Mark Hill helped out with a 6 yard run and halfback Jimmy Hill worked his way to the 25. Mark Hill passed to Blount to the 14 for a gain of 11. Three plays later, tailback Coley went into the end zone for the touchdown from six yards out. Blount added the extra point, 35-0. With only 41 seconds remaining in the second quarter, the Lobos needed a little rest.

Tailback Ken Moseley scored Longview's final touchdown of the night on a 35 yard run down the left side of the field with 11:51 remaining in the fourth chapter on a hand-off from quarterback Blackshear Jameson.

The touchdown was set up when defensive safety Bobby Bobo intercepted a pass from quarterback Jerrold Black at the 42 of Longview.

Pemberton's first touchdown of the night came with 1:51 left in the game when quarterback Black passed to end Mack Curry in the end zone. Black's pass for the two point conversion failed. The touchdown pass was caught by Curry was past the goal post. The films will show but the officials gave the Panthers a touchdown.

Quarterback Black scored their second touchdown with 36 seconds left in the game from one yard out. Black's run for the two pointer failed. The touchdown was set up when quarterback Mike Northcutt went to the air and his pass was intercepted by Alvin Davis at the Longview 48.

The Lobos played an excellent game. The hard work this past week paid off. They are still champions - maybe not be No. 1 in Texas but No. 1 in Longview.

Noseguard Joe Day injured his arm and may be out for the Lufkin game next Friday night. How serious the injury is was not learned late Friday.
