LONGVIEW DUMPS JOHN TYLER
LONGVIEW - Classic football, so says the cook book, requires just the right touch of offense and defense.

Spice these ingredients with action and suspense and you have a dish guaranteed to make football fan hungry for more.

Longview's Lobos served that dish to the hometown folks here Friday night in Lobo Stadium by polishing off the John Tyler Lions, 34-8, in a District 8-AAAA contest before a crowd of around 8,000.

The Lobos clinched a tie for the district championship with this win over John Tyler. The Longview team had hopes of Tyler Lee beating Lufkin Friday night at Rose Stadium in Tyler. But the Panthers edged the Rebels, 8-7. So on Friday, Nov. 17 in Panther Stadium at Lufkin, the Panthers will play host to the undefeated Lobos in a 7:30 p.m. contest.

Longview with a 4-0-0 district 8-AAAA mark and a 9-0-0 season record will face Lufkin who has a 3-1-0 mark (John Tyler beat Lufkin 10-0) and a 5-4-0 season record. The big question of the week will be: can the Lobos beat the Panthers?

John Tyler's Lions came to play Friday night and it appeared at first the Lobos hadn't arrived. But with 7:33 remaining on the scoreboard the Lobos scored their first touchdown of the evening. That good ole Lobo defense saved the day again. Please, mothers, feed those boys two big steaks per day this week. They need it after the way they played here Friday night.

Chief cook quarterback Steve Judy, 172-pound senior, ran for one Lobo touchdown and passed one touchdown, and also aided in another touchdown in the third chapter.

But the big break in the early minutes of the contest came when John Tyler's punter Mike Snodgrass went back to punt on fourth down from Tyler's 20 yard line. Three Lobos from the right side of the line rushed and blocked the punt. The ball sailed to the right of the kicker and defensive halfback Larry Meeks picked the ball up around the four and sprinted across the goal line for the touchdown. With 7:33 to go in the first period, the Lobos had a 6-0 lead. Ralph Blount's educated toe added the extra point, 7-0.

John Tyler had won the toss of the coin and elected to receive. Blount kicked off and Allen Martin took the pigskin on the 11 and marched to the 29 before any Lobo could make a tackle.

In four plays Snodgrass punted from the Tyler 37 yard line. Rodney Hill took the kick on the 29 of Longview and returned to the 37. In four plays the Lobos were forced into a punt. Larry Gregg booted the ball down field and Snodgrass took the pigskin on the 13 and returned to the 22.

The Lobo defense went to work. On the first play quarterback Kenny Teel was topped for a loss of four back to the 18. Then fullback Bobby Robertson carried to the 20. On the next play Teel went to the air and missed by a country mile. So it was fourth down and Snodgrass was forced to punt. This is where the punt was blocked by a trio of Lobos and Meeks picked the ball up and scored.

The victory for the Lobos is the ninth straight this year. It was also the ninth home victory in Lobo Stadium for the Longview team. The Lobos have an 11-game winning streak going which dates back to the Texarkana victory last year.

The victory over the Lions was the first for Longview since 1961 when Longview defeated John Tyler, 35-9, in Lobo Stadium. However, in 1966 the two clubs played to a tie, 21-21, in Rose Stadium at Tyler.

Contrary to popular opinion, Steve Judy is not a miracle-worker and he is not an illusion.

He only wins football games. And the husky quarterback did just that here Friday night. He carried the pigskin 10 times for a net of 48 yards and attempted 14 passed and completed seven for 105 yards. Judy's backup man, Roy Carver, came into the game with 5:20 left in the contest.

The Lobos started their second touchdown marched with 10:27 reading on the clock in the second quarter. The Lobos took over on the 20 yard line after quarterback Teel of Tyler had quick kicked on third down from the Tyler 33 yard line. The ball rolled into the end zone for a touchback.

Rodney Hill, the fire-eating tailback, on the first play from the 20 turned on his jet fuel and passed the Lions like they were parked cars to the 35 yard line of Tyler. His gain was good for 45 yards. He too should be fed two steaks a day this week. He earned them Friday night. On the next play the Lobos allowed Hill to carry again. This time he moved the ball to the 28 for a gain of seven.

To give Hill rest on the next play from the 28, fullback Ray Wright plowed to the 26. Then on the next play Judy was slopped as he took one step toward the right guard for no gain. It was fourth down and the Lobos needed one for a first. so Judy took the snap from center David Cox and sprinted to the right side of the line for the touchdown. He marched off 26 yards. Blount added the extra point, 14-0 Longview with 8:12 left on the clock in the second quarter. The Lobos covered 80 yards in five plays and registered two first downs.

Ralph Blount of Longview kicked off and the Lobos were offsides. So Longview was charged with a five yard penalty. Again Blount kicked off and Dana Longacre took the ball on the 29 and returned to the 38 of Tyler.

On the first play, quarterback Teel went to the air and the ball again sailed over the receiver's head a good mile. On the next play Teel was hit by a host of Lobos and the ball bounced from his arms and linebacker Jimmy Parker fell on the ball for the Lobos.

The Lobos didn't go far as the John Tyler defense went to work. On fourth down from the 31 of Tyler, Larry Gregg punted and the ball was killed at the nine yard line.

Tyler took over on the nine and in 10 plays the Lions were on the Longview 16 yard line. It was second down from the Lobo 18 and quarterback Teel went to the right side of the line on a run. He was hit by a Lobo and the Longview team was charged with a penalty. When the official stopped walking the ball was placed at the Longview 8 yard line.

On the next play, Teel passed to end Carl Shine for a touchdown from eight yards out. Feel passed to Snodgrass for the two point conversion. Longview's lead had been cut to 14-8 with 2:33 lead on the clock. The Lions were back in the contest. That eight yard penalty cost the Lobos a touchdown and it wasn't good sportsmanship on the part of that Lobo football player.

John Tyler is the first team in loop play this season to score on the Lobos.

Longview took the kickoff after Tyler had scored and marched for another touchdown. Snores kicked off and Rodney Hill took the pigskin on the six and returned it to the 22.

The Longview team in this 78 yard drive looked more impressive than at any time during the night. At times the Lobos didn't look sharp at all.

From the 22 on the first play tailback Hill gained four to the 26. Wingback Sistrunk carried to the 33 for a first down. His gain was good for seven yards.

Again the Lobo speedster Hill dashed over left guard and twisted his way to the 49 of tyler for a gain of 18 yards. This lad is a champion.

On the 49 of Tyler, Judy elected to go to the air. He missed. Then Judy saw daylight at the right side of the line and then quickly turned back to the middle to the 42 before he was nailed to the turf. However, he gained seven yards. On the next play the ace field general carried to the 39 for a first down with 55 seconds remaining before halftime.

Fullback Gene Portley dashed to the right side to the Tyler 28 for a gain of 11 and a first down. Portley ran out of bounds to stop the clock.

From the 28 Judy again took the snap from center Cox. he went to his left and took plenty of time and the Tyler defense just looked. Judy shot the ball into the air and strongish end Joe Miller caught the ball in the end zone for a touchdown with only nine seconds left before halftime. Blount added the extra point 21-8.

Tailback Rodney Hill scored the only Lobo touchdown in the third quarter on a 31 yard run. With only five seconds left on the clock, Judy's run for the two pointer failed as he slipped on the turf. Longview had a 27-8 lead.

The touchdown drive started with 3:07 left in the third chapter from the Lobo 40 yard line. The big gainer in the drive was an 11-yard pass from Judy to Joe Miller at the right side of the field.

Wingback Sid Sistrunk scored the final touchdown of the night from two yards out with 52 seconds remaining in the game. Blount added the extra point, 34-8. The touchdown was set up when linebacker Jimmy Parker intercepted a pass from quarterback Teel on the 34 of Tyler and returned to the 25.

The drive was guided by quarterback Roy Carver. Carver passed to Sistrunk from he 28 to the two yard line. The next play saw Sistrunk plow over from the two for the touchdown.

The Lions entered the Lobo land only once in the second half.

Defensive end Chal Barnwell intercepted a pass from tailback Mike Snodgrass on the Tyler 43 and returned to the 39 at the start of the fourth quarter. On the first play Judy hit Ralph Blount with a pass that carried the ball to the 15 for a gain of 19 yards.

Three plays later the Lobos were on the two yard line for a first down. Hill carried for six yards and Judy went up the middle for seven to the two. From the two the Lions were charged with being offsides on the first play and the ball was moved to the one yard line. Judy on the first carry pushed the ball forward to the one inch line. Judy on the first carry went over center but the official said he didn't score. The films show different. He had to score no more inches than he had to make. Then on the next play the ball slipped from Judy's hands and the ball was recovered by Tyler to stop the drive. The official can say 1,000 times he didn't score, but most fans and (we) say he did score from the one yard line.

The Lobos racked up another victory and this week will be "Beat Lufkin," and it is a must. The Lobos haven't won the district outright since 1947.
