LONGVIEW CORRALS ARLINGTON, 27-7
LONGVIEW - Arlington came out throwing here Friday night, but when the game was over, the colts had been thrown for a 27-7 loss at the hands of Longview's Lobos.

To any of you folks who might have left after the Colts scored their quick touchdown and let the Arlington team take a 7-0 lead with only 34 clicked off the clock in the north end zone, you should have stayed around. Why? A hungry pack of Longview Lobos devoured the Colts like the Packers took the Cowboys a few short weeks ago.

With the game about five minutes deep in the first quarter the rains came and did it rain! When the Lobos scored their seven points to tie the game up the fans could hardly see the players on the field. However, before the quarter had ended he rain was not coming down as fast as it had been.

That Longview defensive unit played another fine ball game. It was another big team victory for the Lobos. However, the defensive members must be given a big pat-on-the-back for a great job well done. They were Larry Gregg, David Walters, Robert Walker, Johnny Vaughan, Rodney Hill, Keith Bishop, Ray Wright, Larry Meeks, Chal Barnwell, Richard Molpus and Kenny Kimbrough.

Speedster tailback Rodney Hill had pretty busy night for the Lobos.

The Longview athlete was the night's leading ground gainer. He carried the ball 12 times for a net of 101 yards and scored two touchdowns. His first came on a 37-yard pass and run play from quarterback Steve Judy in the first quarter to break the 7-7 tie to give the Lobos a 13-7 lead. Hill's second touchdown came in the early minutes of the third chapter on a 71-yard run.

The Lobos for the second straight week won the toss of the coin prior to the contest. Tri-captains Steve Judy, Larry Gregg and Rodney Hill called the flip. The Lobos elected to receive.

Burl Simmons kicked off to Longview and deep back Rodney Hill took the ball on the Lobo 12 and returned to the 35. On the third play wingback Sid Sistrunk, 170-pound junior, was hit so hard the ball bounced from his arms and Ray Rancom of Arlington fell on the ball for the colts. Sistrunk had gained eight yards before the fumble.

So the Colts took over on the 50 yard line. Quarterback Don Bodenhamer took the snap from center Steve Marks. He stepped back and lofted the ball into the arms of right halfback Rusty Ward near the 29 yard line. The fancy stepper out ran the Lobos past the goal line. The Colts had a 6-0 lead with 11:26 on the clock. Simmons' extra point kick was perfect and the Lobos were trailing, 7-0.

The pass and run play covered 50 yards. A light rain had just started to fall when the Colt quarterback put the pigskin into the air.

Simmons kicked off to the Lobos and Larry Shanks took the ball on the Lobo 30 yard line. On the first play quarterback Steve Judy went to the air and Rodney Hill just missed the bullet by inches. Then on the second play Hill went off left tackle to the 38 for a gain of eight. Fullback Larry Gregg bulled his way to the 39 for a one yarder. It was fourth down and Gregg punted the ball out. Halfback Chris Taggart took the ball on his 21 and returned to the 26. However, a clipping penalty was charged against the Colts and when the officials stopped walking they put the ball down at the 13 yard line.

Left halfback Taggart took a pitch out from Bodenhamer and sailed to the 15. Then on the next play quarterback Bodenhamer fumbled the pigskin and Chal Barnwell recovered the ball on the 14 yard line for the Lobos.

Quarterback Judy on the first play took the snap from center DAvid Cox and turned to the right and sailed passed several would be blockers to cross the goal line untouched. The touchdown covered 14 yards and the Lobos were on the move once again. Ralph Blount's extra point kicks as good and the Lobos had tied the game at 7-all.

Blount kicked off to the Cols and Chris Taggart took the ball on the 13 and returned to the Arlington 46 before he was nailed to the wet turf.

On the fourth play fullback Alan Hart fumbled the wet pigskin and linebacker Jimmy Parker of Longview dashed in quickly and recovered the ball for the Lobos with 7:29 left in the first quarter.

The Lobos fro their own 44 started moving the pigskin. Judy hit split end Ralph Blount with an eight harder that carried the ball to the 44 of Arlington. On the next two tries Rodney Hill came through with several dancing moves and had picked up nine yards to the 39 of the Colts.

From the 39, the Lobos just couldn't be stopped. On third down and the Lobos needing eight for a first, quarterback Judy shot a bullet into the arms of Rodney Hill. The lad caught the ball on the 27 and sprinted the across the goal line. The pass-run play covered 37 yards. With 4:39 left in the first quarter, Longview had a 13-7 lead. Blount's kick once again was good and the Lobos led 14-7.

When Blount kicked the extra point the fans from the stands could not see the action because of the heavy rain storm.

The second quarter was a see-saw battle among the punters.

Defensive halfback Mark Hill returned not punt 24 yards for the best of the night among the backs for either team. Hill's timely tackles and blocks saved the Lobos many, many times.

At the start of the third chapter, with a light rain falling, the Lobos went to work. The several hundred Longview fans that stayed to see the fun in the rain gave the players a big round of cheers when they returned to the field.

Five plays later punted Rusty Ward booted the ball out and Mark Hill took the wet pigskin on the 19 and returned to the 29.

From the 29 yard line the Lobos made history. Quarterback Judy on a handoff to tailback Rodney Hill gave the fans something to talk about for a long while. The ace runner broke away from several Colt tacklers and sprinted 71 yards for a touchdown. With 9:06 left in the third quarter, the Lobos had a 20-7 lead. Blount's extra point kick sailed to the right of the uprights. So the Lobos had to settle for only six points.

After the kickoff the two clubs exchanged one punt each and on the second punt by Arlington the Lobos took over on their own 37 yard line. A clipping penalty against the Lobos had moved the ball back to the 37 yard line.

On the third down, Longview hadn't moved the ball but a few inches and Coach Tommy Hudspeth voted to allow fullback Gregg to punt on third down with the Lobos needing 10 for a first. Halfback Chris Taggart took the ball and was hit by several Lobos until the ball bounced from his arms and Rodney Hill recovered the ball on the Arlington 27 yard line.

Three plays later quarterback Judy sailed a bomb into the arms of end Ralph Blount. The pass covered 26 yards in the right end zone. With 1:26 left in the third chapter the Lobos continued the lead, 26 to 7. Blount's extra point pushed the score to 27-7.

Coach Hudspeth in the early minutes of the fourth quarter sent in several of his reserves. Quarterback Roy (Stick) Carver took over the barking the signals.

The Lobos racked up a total of 161 yards rushing and 71 yards in the passing department. They had a grand total of 232 yards. The Colts came through with 114 yards rushing and 106 in the air for a grand total of 222 yards.

The Colts compiled 15 first downs and the Lobos made only eight.

The Lobos had to have set some kind of record by being penalized 100 yards and the Colts having only 30.
