LONGVIEW'S HILL WINS IT ON PUNT RETURN
LONGVIEW - A title-hungry pack of Carthage Bulldogs escaped from the cage Longview's Lobos had constructed for them in the first and fourth quarters of the non-conference careerned around widely over the Lobo Stadium green until defensive halfback Glenn (Skippy) Archer, 164-pound senior, turned back to his old animal-taming act to run the Bulldogs into another enclosure here Friday night as 5,5000 plus spectators looked on.

Archer, who is president of the Longview Student Council, showed his great defensive ability to save a 7 to 0 victory for the Lobos with timely tackles all during the contest.

Longview's Lobos were mighty lucky to gain their third straight victory from this fighting Bulldog club. Don't count Carthage out of the race for the District 7-AAA championship.

The defeat for Carthage was its second of the early season. In the season opener, Sept. 10, Carthage fell to the strong and mighty Marshall's Mavericks, 21 to 0.

Carthage tried mightily to give Longview a black "I" here Friday night on a very hot September evening. However, several Lobos didn't want the black "I" and fought back with outstanding playing on offense and defense.

Tailback Rodney Hill, a tiny Sophomore, with his sterling speed gave the fans something to talk about during the weekend. Don't talk too long Lobo fans because Mr. Woodrow Wilson's Wildcats will be in town Friday night, Oct. 1 for a 7:30 p.m. contest.

Hill, who is one of several fast backs on the Lobo club, returned a 37-yard punt from the foot of end Tommy Allison in the second quarter for the only touchdown scored Friday night. Kicking specialist Keith Parker booted the ball through the uprights for the extra points, 7 to 0, with one minute and 11 seconds remaining in the second chapter.

Carthage had taken over on its 12-yard line with "less than three minutes on the clock before halftime on a fumble by Longview's quarterback James Street. The ace field general was hit by a host of Bulldogs very quickly when he took the snap from the center,. Defensive star Terry Bailey of Carthage fell on the ball.

On the first try halfback Pat Browning, who was the big ground gainer for both clubs with 78 yards on 16 tries, started with the ball off right tackle. However, a backfield in motion penalty was called against Carthage. So the officials moved the pigskin back to the six yard marker. Quarterback Larry Ritter on the next try fumbled and recovered the ball for no loss of yards. Browning on a pitch-back from Ritter at right end moved the ball to the eight yard line. It was third down and 14 needed for a first when quarterback Ritter was rushed by linebacker Mike Maberry back to the three.

With a fourth down and 19 needed to get out of trouble, Coach Phil Koonce yelled, "Kick the ball out." That is what Mr. Tommy Allison did. However, he didn't think fancy speedster Rodney Hill would be returning the ball for a touchdown.

The jittery tailback hit at right side, scissored free from a couple of tackles and fled down the sideline as if he was chasing rabbits in a pasture.

Allison's kick was good for 33 yards to keep the record straight.

Dean Stalcup kicked of for Longview after the fans had stopped cheering. The kick was taken on the 49-yard line of Carthage by Andy Durrett and returned to the 45-yard line of Longview.

Halfback Browning moved the pigskin from the 45 to the 40 for a gain of five. On the next play a 14 yard penalty was marked off against the Bulldogs. From the Carthage 45, Browning was pushed back for a loss of two to the 43. Then quarterback Ritter was snowed by guard Glenn Skinnere back to the 33 for a loss of 10. Punter Allison was called upon again for his toe. From the 33 he booted the ball to the Carthage 23 for a gain of 24 yards.

It was first and 10 on the 23, Gregg blasted off left guard to the 20. Then Hill plowed up the middle to the 15,. It was third and two for a first-in-10. This is where Street fumbled the pigskin on the 12-yard line after being hit soundly by the Bulldogs and Terry Bailey recovered the ball for the Bulldogs.

Carthage Bulldogs was expert in killing time on the clock. With nine minutes and 15 seconds left on the clock in the final chapter, Carthage took over on its 13-yard line after taking a punt off the foot of wingback Cecil Newton. Danny Denton, Carthage fancy stepping halfback, took the punt on the six-yard line of Carthage. Newton kicked from the Carthage 47. Denton caught the pigskin, turned around and went to his right when he saw several Lobos after him. He sprinted back to the three and then turned on the speed to the 13-yard line before the Lobos could nail him to the cross.

With 9:15 on the clock from the 13-yard line, the Bulldogs under the fine leadership of quarterback Ritter started moving and the Lobos just could not stop this club. However, the game officials did. From the 47-yard line of Longview, fullback Mickey LaGrone, 190-pound senior, took the ball from Ritter and turned on the steam. He went through the Lobo front wall line rats would eat cheese. Good ole Skippy Archer saved the Lobos. He came through with a shoe-string tackle at the 13-yard line. However, an official threw a red flag and charged the Bulldogs with five yards. Not sure what the penalty was for, but never-the-less the Bulldogs were stopped.

The ball was placed back on the 48-yard line of Carthage. Browning on the next try carried to the 47 of Longview. With three minutes and 30 seconds left in the game, Tommy allison was forced to punt and the ball rolled dead on the Lobo 14-yard marker.

Longview ran a few plays then Cecil Newton booted the ball out. Then Carthage recorded a few. But the Bulldogs just couldn't get back into the game after that five yard penalty that most likely cost them a touchdown.

Defensive standouts for the Bulldogs were Butch Bagley, Terry Bailey, Randy Alexander and Danny Owens. You might say the entire club put on a very good show against the Lobos.

Longview must be ready for Woodrow Wilson Friday night, Oct 1. The Wildcats marked through another victory Friday night by beating Dallas Samuel, 14 to 0. They beat Thomas Jefferson last week, 53 to 6.
