LONGVIEW UPENDS WACO HIGH TIGERS, 10-0
LONGVIEW - Shadowy James Street, squirming like an Adagio dancer with a scorpion in his tights, plastered Waco's Tigers with his own special magic Friday night and the Longview Lobos won their first non-league game of the season, 10 to 0, here in Lobo Stadium as 6,000+ fans looked on.

Longview's Lobos used a mixture of Street, tailback Rodney Hill and the fancy toe of Keith Parker to subdue the Tigers from the Baptist town of Waco.

The victory was the second straight over the Tigers. Last year at Waco, the Lobos defeated the Tigers, 43 to 22, and Mr. Street was again the big hero of the contest.

The Lobos displayed a fair passing attack to snap back into the contest after going scoreless in the first quarter of action. Longview's Street attempted 10 and completed three for 35 yards.

Tailback Rodney Hill was the big ground gainer for the Lobos with 106 yards on 12 tries. His big gainer came on a 49 yard run for the only touchdown of the night in the non-conference game.

A great deal the success must be credited to the fine defensive play of linebacker Mike Maberry, left safety Gary Miller, tackle Dusty Pitting, middle linebacker Clarence Harper, guard Glenn Skinner, tackle Danny Bogue, guard Keith Bishop, linebacker Stan Bobo and a great host of defensive halfbacks.

Longview found a fine runner in tailback Rodney Hill, 149-pound sophomore. This lad has moves that truly are great and is a tough athlete to bring down.

The first quarter was scoreless for both clubs. However, the Lobo started hitting and tackling in the second period to set up the 16 yard field goal with two seconds left in the second chapter to give the Lobos that extra energy they needed to carry them through the contest.

Tailback Ronnie Nobles of Waco was the big gun for the Tigers. Nobles carried the ball 23 times for 86 yards. He almost be credited in setting up Longview's field goal.

Quarterback Jim Spurgeon on a pitchout to Nobles was hit hard by linebacker Mike Maberry of Longview. When MaBerry hit the fancy stepper the ball fell from his arms and Maberry landed on the ball on the Longview 24 yard line with less than three minutes not he clock in the second chapter of this non-league game. This one big play was the turning point in the game.

Prior to the fumble by Nobles it looked as if the Tigers were going to score on the Lobos. Halfback Paul Cotton punted to Longview from the Tiger 34 yard line and Rodney Hill fumbled the ball on the Lobo 34-yard line, where it was recovered by Waco.

Wingback Gary Byrd took this ball and moved the pigskin from the 34 to 20 for again of 14 and a first down. Then Nobles took over and dashed to the left side to the 20 yard line. And again he took the ball on a pitch-out from quarterback Spuregon and was hit by Maberry and fumbled the ball. Maberry quickly jumped on the ball.

Longview took over on the 24 yard line with fullback Larry Gregg, 163-pound Sophomore, going to the 28. Rodney Hill moved the pigskin to the 34 to record a first down for Longview.

Quarterback Street hit wingback Cecil Newton for a long gainer. However, a five yard penalty was charged against the Lobos.

Two plays later Street hit weak side end John Watson on the left side of the field for a gainer of 13 yards to the 45 yard line of Longview. Then Street passed to Newton to the Tiger 44 for a gain of 11 yards. This was good for a first and 10.

Tailback Hill plowed to the 16 and then Street, on a keeper, went to the six yard line before two Waco linemen grounded the talented runner. Quickly the Lobos called timeout with two seconds remaining on the clock before halftime.

Coach Bain voted to allow end Keith Parker to try his "golden toe" at a field goal. Parker's kick was perfect. The ball sailed through the uprights with room to run a team of mules through. Street held the ball for Parker.

Parker gave the fans something to talk about during half as Longview led, 3 to 0.

Lobos jumped on the Tigers in the third chapter like bees on honey. Gary Duckett kicked off to the Lobos and Richard Molpus returned the kick from the 30 to the 39 yard line.

From the 39 of Longview, the Lobos started moving the pigskin. Tailback Rodney Hill was the first Lobo to try his hand carrying the pigskin. He moved the ball to the 42 yard marker. Then Street on a keeper to the right side went to the 46 yard line. And then fullback Gregg plowed over right tackle to the 49 of Waco to give Longview a first down.

On the 49 yard line, Mr. Hill came through with a spectacular 49 yard run to score the only touchdown of the night and this truly gave the Lobo fans something to talk about for a long time.

The spirited crowds watched Dusty Pitting block Lewis Dickson as he nearly tackled Hill on the long run. But, after Pitting hit this lad, he was not able to get up and run after Hill.

The 49-yard run from scrimmage was the longest run of the contest for either ball club.

Hill is going to make Longview one of the finest running backs on the club.

Keith Parker came through with the extra point and the Longview club settled for a 10 to 0 lead.

the Lobos made lots of mental mistakes. But what counts is they won the contest. This will give the Lobos extra power this coming week in making ready for Dallas Adamson on Friday night, Sept. 17th in Lobo Stadium.

A big "pat-on-the-back" must be given to the fine blocking by tailback Skippy Archer. He carried the ball only three times for nine yards. Another lad that must be given lots of credit and that is fullback Larry Gregg. He carried six time for 31 yards.

But again the big lad in the Lobo offense must be Rodney Hill. He showed Friday night he wants a starting job on the Big Green unit and may have earned one.

The big surprise of the game came when Keith Parker booted the 16 yard field goal. This kid is a dedicated athlete and really wants to be a great Lobo player. With the kind of help, the Lobos may be calling on him several times this season.

Ticket to the Dallas Adamson game will go on sale Monday morning at the Longview Business office.
