SMILEY OF HOUSTON DEFEATS LONGVIEW, 21-18
HOUSTON - It was just a matter of starting a little too late and failing to make the extra point conversions here Friday night.

As a result the Longview Lobos had to settle on the short end, and a very short it was, of a 21-18 contest with the Smiley Eagles.

Trailing 21-0 at the start of the second half, the Lobos caught fire in the final 24 minutes and mustered 18 points. But a pair of two-point conversions failed, and a one-point try was blocked, and that proved to be the margin of victory for the host team.

James Street, who handled the quarterback chores for the Lobos, guided the 18-point explosion by tapping in a six-pointer from five yards out midway in the third quarter. The score erased the goose egg for the Lobos, but Street's pass for the two-point conversion failed.

Minutes later Street turned in the most spectacular play of the game. He pulled in Mike Stamps' punt on his own 25 and raced untouched 75 yards for the score. Pat Lindsey tossed in the key block that gave Street his daylight, and he galloped all the way. Again the two-point conversion failed.

Tommy Albright set the stage for the final Longview tally when he intercepted Stamps' pass and raced 20 yards to the Eagles' 47. Eight plays later Glenn Cobb jumped in from five yards out for the final Lobo score.

The 47-yard drive was aided by a 22-yard aerial from Street to David Reese. Street also hit Mike Maberry with a 10-yarder, and Street set the stage for the score with a four-yard pass to Cobb. The Lobos tried for one point, but it failed.

With the clock ticking off, the Lobos took possession on their own 33, but a rash of passes produced only 16 yards and Smiley took possession with only seconds left in the game.

Smiley scored first when Mike Bracewell intercepted a Street pass and raced 17 yards for the score. J.D. Seaburn added the one-point conversion.

In the second quarter his first of two touchdowns when he raced over from 12 yards out. Stamps kicked the one-pointer to give Smiley a 14-0 advantage.

Again it was Stamps. This time for the nine-yard line for the tally. And again he kicked the one-point conversion.

the game was plagued with a rash of penalties. A total of 90 yards was stepped off against the Lobos in the 48-minute playing time. At the same time the host team drew 95 yards in penalties in a game that last two- and one-half hours before a better than average crowd.

Brightest spot in the Lobos' defensive unit was Terry Don Phillips. The 190-pound right end chalked umpire than his number of tackles and was credited with an equal number of assists.

It was a hard defeat for the Lobos, who were favored to take the contest from the Eagles. The defeat dropped the Lobos to a 3-2 standing as they close out non-district play.
