STREET CARRIES LOBOS BY WACO, 43-22
WACO - Waco High Tigers crossed the wrong street Friday night, and this one - Longview quarterback James Street - exploded for 28 points as he carried the Lobos to a 43-22 decision over the Tigers at Waco's Municipal Stadium.

The non-district game, the season's opener for both squads, was staged before a slim crowd of less than 1,5000 persons. Longview is in District 8-AAAA. Waco is in District 13-AAAA.

Waco, in spite of Street's scoring outburst, had its brighter moments. The Tigers, with brilliant contributions from break-away threats Keith Luft and Joe Crow, held a 22-21 edge at halftime and threatened to walk off with all the marbles until the final, disastrous fourth period.

Street, with 181 yards on 25 trips, paced the grinding Lobo ground assault.

The game broke apart in the opening moments. Waco won the toss, received and Luft returned the kick to the Tiger 32. Then, on first down, the dancing little halfback started right, saw daylight, picked up a key block and went all the way. The scoring jaunt covered 68 yards and the tally came with the game only six seconds old.

Waco quarterback Jimmy Spurgeon tried to pass but wound up running the points. Waco held an 8-0 lead, and it looked like the East Texans were in for a rough night.

With 3:55 left in the first period, Longview tied it up with Street racing 16 yards for the touchdown. The play capped a 53-yard march that started with a Tiger fumble, and it took only five plays. Street ran the points, blasting off right tackle, and it was a new ball game.

Waco dropped another fumble after the Longview score, but the Lobo recovery went to no avail. On the fourth play, after driving to the Tiger 25, Street went back to pass, was hit, and was caught in the backlash of his would-be aerial bomb.

Tiger halfback Joe Crow gathered it in at the 30, then scampered 70 yards for the second Tiger tally. A running try for points failed, and with 1:28 left in the quarter, Waco owned a 14-8 lead.

Street notched Longview's second touchdown on an 11-yard romp with 9:57 left in the second quarter. Left end Ronald Cook booted the extra point, and the Lobos had the edge, 15-14.

Waco made it 22-15 with 7:30 remaining. The Tigers, with quarterback Spurgeon hitting end Steve Garrett for consistent yardage, moved from their 35 to the Longview 30 in seven plays, and the finale came with Spurgeon hitting Crow for the score.

Jerry Bilyeu circled right end for the points, and Waco as on top, 22-15.

Longview made it 22-21 at halftime. The Lobos got the score just 2:40 before intermission, and Street - as might be expected - hammered out the touchdown on a 12-yard blast that capped a 62-yard march. A pass for points was the difference, and it fell incomplete.

The Lobos, with Cook returning a Tiger punt 53 yards, went ahead with 4:21 remaining in the third period. Street the points and Longview led, 29-22.

Fullback Glenn Cobb scored again for the Lobos with 7:01 left in the final frame. Street ran the points, and it was all over - at least as far as Waco was concerned.

Longview's last touchdown came with six seconds on the board. Street - and it was that man again - racked up the tally on an 11-yard blast, shaking off three would-be tacklers in the process. A kick failed, but it came only after rate officials chased over-anxious spectators from the field.

Waco's erratic defense was paced by guards C.A. Miller, and Ronnie Brink, tackle Leslie Dickson, and Garrett. Phillips, guard Pat Lindsey, and tackle Kenneth Norwood topped the Longview efforts.

That closing stanza, with Longview already holding a seven-point margin, saw the Lobos punch across the clinching tally with 7:01 remaining, and then with only six seconds left, add insult to injury with still another score.

The Tigers were blanked during the final two periods. A passing game fell apart at the seems, and Luft, Waco's most dangerous threat, was perched on the bench with a muscle injury.

That injury, received on the kickoff following Longview's second touchdown, played a major role in Waco's loss. Until that time, the speedy Tiger halfback had 79 yards on just three carries, and in spite of sitting out the final three quarters, he still finished as the Tigers' top gainer of the night.
