TEXARKANA HOLDS OFF LONGVIEW, 20-13
TEXARKANA - The underdog Longview Lobos staged a desperate rally late in the final quarter but fell three yards shorts and succumbed to the Texas High Tigers, 20-13, Friday night at Grim Stadium in Texarkana.

The Lobos, rated 14 points inferior to the powerful Bengals prior to the game, came from behind twice to tie the contest but a fumble in the final quarter on their own 19 yard marker spelled disaster.

Trailing 13-6 in the third period of play, Longview safety Harold Bridges field a Texarkana punt on his own 16 yard stripe and ran it back 84 yards to pay dirt. Ronald Cook's extra point kick nodded the game 13-13, but Texarkana jumped out in front to stay a few minutes later.

Bridges, who it seemed would be a lobo hero, was the goat on Texas High's winning drive. He attempted to field a Tiger punt on his own 19 yard line, but fumbled the ball and the Bengals recovered on the Longview 19. The Tigers used only three plays from that point to score what proved to be the winning touchdown.

Ty Bain's Lobos made a desperate effort to get back into the game in the final quarter, driving from their own 15 yard marker to the Texas High 9 and gaining a first down and goal to go. The Texas defense was equal to the occasion and quarterback James Street was stopped three years short of the promised land on a fourth down play.

The setback at the hands of the Texarkana team was the second in District 8-AAAA play for the Lobos against a single victory. Their season record stands at 2 and 6. The defeat virtually knocked them out of contention for the conference crown, though they do have an outside shot at a share of the title.

The Texas High victory was their sixth in eight games for Watty Meyers' crew and improved the Tigers league mark to 2 and 1.

The Bengals scored first in tonight's battle of offense, driving 42 yards in the initial drive after recovering a fumble by Lobo halfback Bridges. The biggest gain in the eight play series was a 32-yard throw from quarterback Melvin Bateman to end Tom Collins. It was one of two completions for the Texarkana team to record against a stout Lobo defense.

The payoff play on the first touchdown drive was a second down on the Lobos one-yard line where fullback Tooky Thomas went over Longview defenders for the score. Lester Smith, the Tigers' answer to Longview's Ronald Cook, sent the extra point kick wide to the left leaving the score at 6-0, in the first quarter.

The Lobos tied the score on a long drive that began late in the initial period and ended midway through the second quarter when Street carried the pigskin over from from one yard out. The play was the 12th of the series, the big gainer being a 12-yard run that Bridges that took the Lobos to the Tiger 37-yard line.

Texarkana got back out front not long after when halfback John Reed broke through the Longview secondary and scampered 38 yards for a touchdown. Lester Smith's kick was through giving Texas High a 13-6 lead with 6:19 left in the first half.

Longview tied the score in the third quarter on Bridges long punt return and Cook's extra point, but the Tigers of Texas High came right back after recovering a fumble later in the quarter.

Halfback Pete Snow scored the go ahead touchdown for Texarkana bowling three yards in on a first down play.

Bridges led the Lobos' rushing attack with 49 yards on 20 carries.
