IRVING TIGERS DEFEAT LOBOS, 18-0
LONGVIEW - Irving threw away its "three yards and a clod of dust" here Friday night, turned loose its halfbacks for the first time in several games and defeated the Longview Lobos, 18 to 0, in a non-conference football battle in Lobo Stadium before some 7,500 fans.

Left halfback Kenny Walters almost single-handedly wrecked Longview's defense as he racked up the touchdowns and posted 60 yards on 10 tries. The talented halfback, who holds the State Trck title in the 120-yard hurdles with a winning time of 14.1 second, was the "king" football gridder for the Tigers.

Walters, who combined power with speed to ring up the victory, scored in the first and second quarters for the Tigers.

To hear Irving tell it, it sounded as easy as stealing apples from the corner fruit merchant.

And to hear the Lobos, you knew how the fruit vendor felt as apple thieves ruined his business.

The Tigers displayed a sharp passing and running attack the entire contest. The Lobos were simply buried with awesome power and swarming defense.

Halfback Walter's individual assault against the Lobos was the most impressive runner in the backfield for the Tigers. In the first quarter of last action, Walters scored the Tigers' first touchdown n a 36-yard sprint tot he right side of the field. He took the hand-off from quarterback Darny Gordon and looked straight ahead to the goal line. He was not touched by a Lobo.

Quartebrack Chris Schrang, who had been injured in prior games, entered the game and his extra point kick fell short of the uprights and the Tigers settled for six points with 4:10 on the clock.

The second touchdown of the evening came when the Tigers started their scoring drive on their own 38-yard stripe. It took 16 plays and four first downs for them to score. Field general Chris Schrang went to the airways and sent the ball high into the sky and halfback Walters jumped halfway to meet it. When he landed he was in the end zone for the six pointer with 5:50 remaining on the clock in the second chapter. The pass was good for six yards.

Walters was given the chance to boot the extra point and it went too far to the right of the bar.

A pass from quarterback James Street of Longview was intercepted by defensive halfback Tommy Tompkins on the 34-yard line of Irving. He skirted five yards down the middle of the field and then voted to go to the sidelines for the remainder of the run. The Tiger fans came to their feet for the one millionth time, according to an official counter.

Quarterback Schrang's conversion pass for the two-pointer failed as he was snowed by a host of Lobos.

The Lobos made one long drive into Tiger's land to the 31-yard line before Tommy Thompson intercepted a bullet from Longview's signal caller James Street. Thompson ran the pigskin back for 17 yards.

Two plays later center Richard Rossow intercepted a pass from quarterback Chris Schrang and charged to the 50-yard stripe.

Longview took over and ace quarterback Street went to the air and his pass was caught by Tompkins, who tip-toed along the sidelines for the touchdown with 44 seconds remaining in the half.

The Lobo scoring machine sputtered and quivered again through the first half, as they were able to assemble only 45 on the ground. Longview at halfback had two first downs and the Tigers had seven.

Irving compiled 111 yards rushing in the first half and 29 through the air.

Halfback Harold Bridges did an extra fine job for the Lobos on kickoff returns as he nearly got away on every try. He carried the pigskin three times for 114 yard, the best this season for the lad.

Kicking special Donald Cook came through for the Lobos in "flying colors" as he booted the ball 259 yards for an average of 32.3 in eight tries.

The hard-charging Lobo line and an equally determined bunch of backs looked much improved Friday night. Outstanding on defense were Pat Lindsey and Dickie McDavid.

Quarterback Street was the top ball carrier for the Lobos as he recorded 53 yards on 13 tries. Runner up was fullback Glenn Cobb 28 yards for nine times and Harold Bridges carried nine times for 22 yards.
