LONGVIEW - Quarterback Robert Myers and the Longview Lobos jammed 35 points into the middle two quarters here Friday night to completely annihilate the John Tyler Lions, 35-9.
Myers ran for two touchdowns, passed for two six-pointers, tossed for a two-point conversion and booted two extra points and that was about all she wrote - except for the Lions' nine points and another seven by Longview. After John Tyler end David Roan had put the Lions in the lead, 3-0, with a 23 yard field goal early in the game, Longview started to roll late in the initial period and hit pay dirt on the first play of the second stanza. Myers sneaked over from the one to cap a 69 yard drive and then passed to halfback Hawk Clements for the extra points. Four minutes later, powerful fullback Don Petty crashed over standing up from the three to stretch the Lobo lead. On the final play of the second quarter, Myers passed to Petty on a screen pass and Petty raced the final 10 yards of the 12 yard touchdown play. Myers booted the extra point and Longview had a 21-3 halftime cushion. They came right back on the prowl in the second half, pushing 75 yards after receiving the kickoff for their fourth touchdown. Myers, on the twelfth play of the drive, slipped over from the one. His conversion kick was again true. Longview got its last touchdown with 2:43 left in the third period. Myers moved the Lobos downfield on a 29 yard pass to Petty and then hurled the final 17 yards to Clement for the touchdown. This time Richard Watson converted. John Tyler marched 51 yards on six plays for its only touchdown. A 21 yard scamper by halfback Algie Allen and 11 yard pass from Audie Long to Robert Caldwell helped move the ball to the one where Long sneaked over. A pass try failed to add extra points. Myers passed 15 times during the tilts and completed 12 for an even 200 yards. Petty, the 200-pound bulldozer, gained 76 yards overland on 15 carries to pace all runners. He also gathered in four passes for 69 yards to share honors with Myers. The loss leaves John Tyler with a 2-1-1 district record and the Lobos now stand 3-1. |
