LOBOS LOSE 27-6 BATTLE TO MIGHTY WICHITA FALLS
WICHITA FALLS - Longview had to play ball Friday night, and it did as the Lobos outplayed sensational Wichita Falls in every department before losing, 6-27, to Coyotes.

Wichita Falls, ranked number one in the states and victors by large margins over five opponents already this season, got the scare of its life Friday when the mighty Coyotes had to battle to the wire to down the pesky Lobos from Longview.

Longview made more first downs than the victors and compiled more total offensive yardage then Wichita Falls, but the Lobos just couldn't push into the end zone through times to pull off the top upset of the year.

Wichita Falls coach Joe Goldberg said following gate game that, "This is by far the best team we have faced this season. They played us right down to the wire and we consider ourselves lucky to get the win."

This is the first time this season any team had made more first down than Wichita Falls. It is also the first time any team has made more offensive yards than the Coyotes.

This is the first time Wichita Falls has been held to less than 300 yards rushing or 400 yards total offense this season, and it is the first time the mighty Coyotes have been shut out in the first quarter this season.

Wichita Falls broke the scoring ice after a scoreless first quarter when the Coyotes notched a six-pointer on a freak play. Longview's inspired defensive team had held the Wichita Falls once again, and the Coyotes were forced to punt.

Larry Shields' punt hit on Longview's five-yard line where Lobo Kenny McKinley attempted to pick the ball up. The ball slipped past Aynesworth and into the end zone where Robert Walker pounced on it of a Coyote touchdown. Robbie Shields booted the extra points nd the Coyotes led, 7-0.

Wichita Falls also posted the second score of the game. The Coyotes got the ball on the 40-yard stripe. Mike Kelly hit Ken Aboussie for a 25-yard pass completion before Kelly unreeled a 26-yard run down to Longview's nine-yard line. Larry Shields, a 1960 all-state performer, cracked up the middle for the score. The score came with a little more than five minutes remaining in the second quarter.

Longview got into the scoring act in the fading seconds of the second quarter when Jim Shillings intercepted a Wichita Falls pass on Longview's 25-yard line.

Lobo quarterback Robert Myers, who had a sensational night passing, took the airways and carried the Lobos all the way. Myers hit Hawk Clements, Jimmy Tramel and Danny Seale for yardage tome the ball steadily downfield. Myers added the touchdown with only nine seconds left in the first half when he faded a pass, failed to spot a recoverer and tucked the ball under his arm and ran around for a ten-yard touchdown gallop. A Myers to John Malone pass for the points-after was completed out of the end zone, and Longview trailed only 6-14 at halftime.

Longview made its best showing on the night in the third quarter when the valiant Lobos completely thrasher the home towners.

Longview controlled the ball almost the entire third quarter as the Lobos, sparked by Myers' passing and Don Petty's running, took the ball on its town 14 yard line and moved to the Wichita Falls' eight yard stripe befogging losing the ball on downs.

Wichita Falls snapped back to life in the final quarter to win the game.

The Coyotes scored their third tally when Shields broke lose for a 41-yard touchdown ramble. The try for extra point was snuffed by Longview's entire line, but Wichita Falls led 20-6. The tally came with eight-and-a-half minutes remaining in the game.

Wichita Falls' final tally came with five-and-a-half minutes remaining in the game when Kelly climaxed a short drive with a two yard scoring blast up the middle.

This touchdown was set up when Jim Hull intercepted a Myers pass on the Lobo 36 yard line and ran the ball back to the five yard stripe before Myers dumped him.

Longview almost broke loose again in the fading seconds when John Malone ran back the Wichita Falls kick 25 yards to the Longview 45 yard mark. Again Myers took to the air, and the Lobos drove to the three yard line of Wichita Falls before Longview lost possession on downs.

This drive featured a sensational one handed catch by Clements on the Coyote 12 yard line.
