TIGERS HAND LOBOS 2ND DISTRICT LOSS
LONGVIEW - Longview's hope for a District 8-AAAA crown is almost completely out of reach after Friday night's stumbling Lobos falter 14-0 to the Tigers from Texarkana in a family fracas at Lobo Stadium.

The loss drops Longview's conference record to 1-2, and only major upsets vey every team in the last remaining two weeks of play would give the Lobos a chance at even a tie for the title.

Deciding factor, if one factor alone could be considered, in the Friday loss was the Lobo lack of pass defense. Texarkana connect time and time again for good yardage in Longview's leaky behind the line units to ride the passing arms of three accurate passers to win. Trigger men for the airway artistry were quarterback Bob Wright, John Wyrick and Haskle Wright.

Texarkana connected on nine of 13 passes for 119 crucial yards.

Longview's over the head attack connected on eight of 17 attempts for 79 yards.

Most outstanding player on the field Friday night was Longview's spectacular end, Mike DeLatin. The lanky senior terminal man was a demon on defense as he posted timely, jarring tackles throughout the night. DeLatin's showing was easily the most outstanding individual performance turned in by a Lobo this season. His quick defensive blast provided the backbone for one Lobo goal line stand, and he chalked up tackles all over the field through the entire four quarters.

Texarkana's passing attack found open pastures in the Lobo backfield during the first half and struck via the airways for most of their offensive yardage.

Longview's staunch defensive up-front unit came through under fire, but the pass defense crumbled as the visiting Tigers rode a 7-0 lead to the locker room at the mid-game mark.

Longview opened the ballgame looking strong when the Lobos took the opening kickoff and marched 47 yards before three back-to-back miscues cost them the ball.

The opening sustained drive was strictly an overland trip as fullback Don Petty, quarterback Robert Myers and halfbacks Willard Wright and Paul Ketchum punched out consistent short gainers. The drive carrier to Texarkana's 22 yard line before an offside penalty cost five yards, an attempted pass failed to materialize and lost eight yards and an incomplete aerial lost the ball for the Lobos.

Texarkana took over on downs, and immediately connected on a 36 yard pass from quarterback John Wyrick to end Gene Dunn. Two plays later, however, Tiger fullback Jimmy Upson was jarred loose from the ball and Lobo John Owens recovered for Longview on the Lobo 33 yard line.

It took only four plays for Texarkana to gain possession of the pigskin when Petty fumbled and end Billy Gordon recovered for the Tigers on Longview's 42 yard stripe.

The ball exchanged hands three more times before Texarkana made their first big offensive push of the night. This time the Tigers marched 61 yards to Longview's five yard line before the Lobo forward wall, led by Owens, Dick Williams, Bill Ewing, Emory Boring and DeLatin, braced and held. It was DeLatin who turned the tide when he threw quarterback Bob Wright for a two yard loss back to Longview's nine yard line on a third down play. when he tagged Wright trying to cost around left end on the five yard line.

Longview failed to move out of danger, however, and Myers was forced to punt from his own end zone on a fourth and 14 situation. Myers booted 31 yards and the runback brought the ball to the Lobo 21 yard line.

The lone first half scored came six plays later when Upson climaxed the short yardage drive with a one yard blast over right tackle from one yard out for the counter. Setting up the touchdown was a 14 yard pass completion from Wright to Dunn. Neal oliver booted the conversion and the visitors had a 7-0 margin with two minutes left in the second quarter.

The third quarter settled down to mostly a defensive battle with both teams fumbling a lot and failing to get together much of an offensive drive.

Texarkana opened up the final stanza by counting the second score of the night with 5:32 remaining in the contest. The scoring drive was climaxed by a 14 yard pass into the end zone from Wright to Dunn. The drive covered 76 yards and was boosted by three pass completions which accounted for 49 yards. Also aiding the score was a questionable 15 yard penalty against Longview which was met with boos by the Lobo rooters. Oliver booted the extra point to give Texarkana their 14-0 margin.

Longview failed to recover the form which carried them deep into enemy territory in the opening minutes of the game, and the next nearest they came to pay dirt was Texarkana's 31 yard line late in the fourth quarter. This drive, which had carried from Longview's 27 yard mark, was cut short by a pass interception, however, and the fading minutes on the clock ticked off before the Lobos could muster another drive.

Fullback Don Petty was Longview's offensive threat of the night as the hard running junior started moving in the last half and stepped off good yardage through the remainder of the game.
