LONGVIEW RIPS LEE, 47-8
LONGVIEW - The Longview Lobos initiated the Robert E. Lee Rebels of Tyler into District 8-AAAA here Friday night and it was a night the Rebs will not forget.

Lee handed the Lobos two touchdowns early in the game and from then on Longview put the scoring parade in trouncing the Tylerites 47-8.

Longview pushed across two touchdowns in the first period, added another pair in the second stanza to build up a 26-0 halftime lead but the homesteading eleven was not finished yet as they racked up three more counters in the final half.

The victory moved Longview into strong contention for the loop title along with the Texarkana Tigers, winners over John Tyler Friday night.

Lee took the opening kickoff but on the second play halfback Tommy Cooper fumbled and Willard Wright recovered for the Lobos. Four plays later Longview had its initial counter when Wright blasted over left tackle for two yards. Fullback Don Petty, the offensive star for the night, kicked the extra point to give the Gregg County eleven a 7-0 lead.

The next marker came with 2:25 remaining in the first quarter. Quarterback Robert Myers went through center on a keeper play that covered seven yards. Petty again converted for Longview.

Longview's next marker came after Warren Moore had fumbled on the Rebs' 14 yard line. Two plays later Petty romped around right end for 14 yards and a counter. Try for the extra point was blocked and the Lobos held a 20-0 lead.

Jerry Clements intercepted a Reb pass minutes later and it took only nine plays to cover 48 yards. Wright went the final two on a slant off left tackle for the six pointer. An attempt to run for the conversion was cut short.

In the second half Lee started like a new team but after the Rebs of Tyler scored its only touchdown of the night, the flame went out and Longview took charge again.

Lee's scoring drive started on the Lobos' 40 yard line and it took nine plays to cover the needed yardage to pay dirt. The final 16 yards were chalked up on a pass from Rick Hughes to Charles Bridges who was standing all alone in the end zone. Hughes passed to Steve Yates for the two point conversion to close out the scoring for Tyler Lee.

A 26-yard pass play moved Longview into the scoring column again. Myers passed to halfback Paul Ketchum who pulled down the pigskin while being circled by three Reb defenders. Charles Williams booted the extra point.

Williams, a defensive linebacker, got into the scoring early in the final period when he intercepted a Hughes pass on the Lobo 38 yard line and romped down the right sideline for another marker. Williams also converted for the roused up Lobos.

Reserve halfback John Malone scored the final touchdown of the night for Longview. He went off right tackle on an eight yard dive play to chalk up the counter.

Lee manager to garner only one first down in the first half in making a poor showing in the District 8-AAAA clash.
