LOBOS OPEN SEASON WITH 20-12 WIN OVER PASCHAL
LONGVIEW - Longview's surprising Lobos upset favored Paschal High School of Fort Worth 20-12 in an opening spectacular at Lobo Stadium Friday night.

The hard-fighting Lobos spotted Paschal six points in the first quarter before cranking up its producing machines ut once the Lobos started, it was Katy-bar-the-door for the herald Panthers.

The opening touchdown came three and a half minutes into the first quarter when Panther sparkplug Leo Davis plunged from three yards out for the first score on the season.

The drive was set up when Owen pounced on a fumble on the Lobo side of the field.

Longview tied the ball game up with seconds left in the first quarter when fullback Don Petty ran off 33 big yards to the flags. Petty;'s scoring play around left end was set up earlier when halfback Bubba Smith hauled in a punt and ran it back 29 yards to the 41 yard marker.

Smith romped off eight yards off right tackle bye Don Petty took a pitchout from quarterback Robert Myers, where he fought off hopeful defenders in his scoring attack.

A few minutes later the Lobos took control of the pigskin on the 30 yard line when Smith again showed his running ability and returned a punt 34 yards.

Coach Jim Gray's Lobos needed five plays to push over the ball for a six point as John Malone bulled over from one yard out.

The big play of the touchdown drive came on an eleven yard pass completed by Myers to Malone.

The Panthers, who entered the game at least two touchdown favorites, found themselves on the short end of a 12-6 scoreline, and worse things were to come.

The Lobos produced the next score as Paschal attempted a pass out of its own end zone but Ray Gray fumbled the ball and it bounced awkwardly only for a few seconds. Longview's alert end Mike DeLatin jumped on it for a safety.

The Panthers jumped right back into the game a few minutes later when a touchdown brought the Fort Worthers back to within a score.

Panthers quarterback Ray Gray pulled a quarterback sneak up the middle from one yard out to touch pay dirt. Longview threw up a brilliant goal line stand for three plays before Paschal pushed over the score.

Longview iced down the game in the final period when Smith, the Lobos' "Mister-do-it-all" for the night, counted his first touchdown fo the night by sweeping left end from five yards out to put the score at 20-12.

Both teams failed to amok good on an extra point try throughout the battle.

Longview's final touchdown was set up when linebacker Lloyd Phillips intercepted a stray Panther pass on Paschal's 17 yard line. Smith's scoring jaunt came five plays later.

The upset shocker was a major accomplishment for the young Lobos. Paschal was picked as preseason favorite to capture the Fort Worth loop's conference crown.

Smith provided the big fireworks for Longview throughout the game as his tremendous punt returns kept the Lobos within striking distance throughout most of the four quarters. Joining Smith in the offense backfield stars was fullback Petty.

Longview's staunch line was the biggest surprise of the night as the forward wall held Paschal's attack in check. Leading the rugged up-front men were tackle Dick Williams, end Mike DaLatin, center Lloyd Phillips and end Charles Richmond.
