| LUFKIN - Longview's 11 chefs of football trills concocted a sweet frosting for the final district 8-AAAA cake here Friday night and smoothed down a thick 47-6 lair to send Lufkin's Panthers home with only that one small bite.
Bedlam broke loose in the final seconds of the game when a wild rumor, almost as wild as Lobo scoring, got loose that Marshall had downed Tyler in the other half of the district play during the evening. The rumor proved to be just that, leaving the Lobos holding an exact district record as the Tyler Lions but they do not get a chance at bi-district play because of the one penetration lead punched out by Tyler over Longview in a field of mud last week. Both teams hold three wins, no loss and one tie records in district. But, the Lobos proved they were at least four touchdowns better than the Tyler club with scoring almost at will over Lufkin's Panthers. Blasting the ball across Lufkin's goal line were halfback Douglas Bruner and quarterback Kim Flint, both of whom went across twice, fullback Larry Shoemaker and halfback Ray Chancelor. Quarterback Don Petty proved his worth too, with three dashes for points after and put his toe into the pigskin for another point. Shoemaker made the Lobos' look like a professional club with a 65 yard punt to Lufkin's 1-yard line. That was in the last quarter and Longview had only a paltry distance to go to pic up the last touchdown of the season. Lufkin charged out with first possession of the ball like a Lion instead of a Panther and marched 69 yards for the first score of the game. That was just three minutes deep when quarterback Ronnie Redd jabbed over for a final yard after fullback Alton Standley set it up with a 5-yard scamper to Longview's 8-yard line. Redd missed the extra point and the Lobos grabbed the initiative as they received the kickoff, failing to turn it loose throughout the remainder of the game. They moved over 68 yards of ground, with halfback Pete Mobbs rolling up 32 on a brilliant scamper and Bruner breezing the final 23 for the first Lobo touchdown. The score came just 64 seconds after Lufkin's score. Chancelor missed the point on a run. But the fever burned deep after the heart-breaker against Tyler and the Lobos punched out their second touchdown next time they got possession. It rested on a dangerous sop, the Longview 8-yard line. homemaker went 4 yards and old speedy Flint got loose on a thriller to breeze 61 yards to Lufkin's 27. From there until Flint dashed over from the 1, it was Mobbs, Shoemaker, Bruner and Chancelor who moved on short jabs. The score came three minutes deep in the second period, and Petty did a retake of Flint's dash to pick up the points. Longview's mowing machine was cutting down field like a four cycle putt-putt by then, and they used up a paltry 9 seconds to score twice more in the first half. For the first of the two quick touchdowns the Lobos moved over 63 yards on short jabs and a 15-yard beauty from Chancelor to Mobbs to get to Lufkin's 4-yard line. Shoemaker, Shoemaker and Shoemaker picked up three yards on as many tries and then gave the control to Shoemaker for the final yards and the score. Mobbs set up the other quick touchdown when he got sticky fingers, grabbed a Redd pass and ate up 24 yards to Lufkin's 14. Flint hit Mobbs for 11 yards and Bruner broke through for the final 3 yards, with the play starting as the clock rolled to a halftime standstill. The score was 26-6 then, Longview holding the long end of the stick. Shoemaker missed the points on run. The half was four minutes old when Longview again took to the touchdown route, moving 60 yards from their own 40. The trust foursome - Mobbs, Bruner, Flint and Shoemaker - provided the thrills. Bruner made like a Flint with an aerial to Chancelor for the final 8 yards. Petty smashed over for the points. Late in the third period, the feeble attempt to throw a wrench in their gears, moved from midfield to pick up the fifth touchdown of the evening. Shoemaker hit center for 15 and Flint hit Chancelor for 18 yards. But, Flint's second time in the scoring cockpit came and he breezed 10 yards for the score with less than three minutes in the third period. Bruner miss the points on running. Chancelor did the honors for Longview's final score of the game and the season after the Lobos covered a Lufkin fumble on the Lufkin 1-yard line. The Panthers had gotten into that deep hole because of Shoemaker's educated toe. He quick-kicked on third down and the ball leaped and jumped to Lufkin's 1. The Panthers had tried two plays when the fumble and Longview recovery came. After that Chancelor dashed the final score over the final yard. Petty got his second conversion kick of the season, setting up the 47-to-6 tally. |
