WEST MONROE HANDS LOBOS FIRST LOSS OF THE SEASON
MONROE - West Monroe's plucky Rebels clamped a first quarter Cajun jinx on Longivew's jittery Lobos here tonight which held until the last period and ends up sending the visitors home smarting under a 13-7 defeat.

It was Longview's first loss of the season, coming on the heels of four straight non-district victories over Sunset of Dallas, North Side and Arlington Heights of Fort Worth and Grand Prairie.

Longview's ordinarily solid pass defense and rugged line failed to stem the onrush of a Louisiana team which itself tasted defeat in its first tilt this year.

But, all wasn't sour apples during the game. The Lobos got the unorthodox Rebels sized up by the fourth period to slam over a touchdown, and they clicked off yardage with clock-like precision on a second series before one quarterback Kim Flint's passes bounced off a skyful of grasping hands to land in the arms of West Monroe Rebels. Just 28 seconds remained in the game, so naturally the Rebels killed that precious time on line plunges to insure their 6-point lead.

Fumbleitis, from opening kickoff until that fatal pass interception, put the Lobos on the side of an 8-ball they had not seen before.

The Longview line - even though it held staunchly during most of the game - gave way at crucial moments under a pounding Rebel onslaught.

Flint's long-barreled arm unlimbered with exactness just twice and both times came during the Lobos' lone touchdown drive midway in the fourth period. He hit end Larry Seale to cover 32 yards on first down after Longview took over on downs on their own 31-yard line. The second payoff aerial went to Douglas Bruner for another 33 yards and the touchdown. End Robert McLendon also got into the scoring picture on a 3-yard gainer from Flint. Fullback Larry Shoemaker added the point on runs.

West Monroe's Rebels grabbed a tight hold on the long end of the rope on the first play of the game when Lobo halfback Pete Mobbs took the opening kickoff and fumbled as a Rebel jarred him on his 34-yard line. Then, like a hay machine grinding over rough ground, the Rebel offense bared the field with halfbacks John Moses and Ronnie Perksin and fullback Don Harrell taking turns at the controls.

Harrell slammed through the Lobo line for the first 10-yard gain and two plays later Moses repeated for a second first down. Moses picked up 4 more yards to put the ball on Longview's 5-yard line. Perkins took a pitchout from quarterback Ronnie Farmer and breezed off tackle to pay dirt for the first touchdown of the game. Moses picked up the point on a left-end sweep to up the tally to 7-0. The paying play came just four minutes deep in the first quarter.

It was the first time the Lobos had trailed so early since their first tilt against Sunset of Dallas.

The Rebels threatened Longview's goal line seriously once again in the second quarter on a 75-yard drive to the Lobo 15. That drive started out with the Rebels forced to punt on fourth down. Moses got his toe on the skin for 34 yards but Mobbs and Chancelor locked horns trying to snatch it in the air. Result was a fumble and Rebel tackle Glen Bell covered it. Moses, Perkins and end Jimmie VanZile rolled over 40 yards before the drive halted on downs.

The half came around on a sour 7-0 note, with West Monroe leading the ball game.

Longview's Lobos pushed out a goal-line-or-bust series immediately after replay began in the third period, with Shoemaker and Bruner steadily punching through on short gainers. They got to the Rebel 12 before they finally went out.

That's when the Rebels put a clincher on the game, smashing down field on a series which picked up 88 yards in a brilliant inter-change of line plays and passes.

Sure-sighted quarterback Ronnie Farmer accounted for 37 yards with aerials to VanZile and halfback Don Miletello.

Miletello was on a strong beam goal ward on a 39-yard scamper before getting pulled down. Four plays later he made good the challenge by bouncing over to pay dirt from four yards out. That touchdown won the game.
